Venice Ghost Walking Tour

Hear strange tales about Venice's Bovolo Staircase on a ghost walking tour

Meet your ghost-expert guide near the Rialto Bridge and set off on your 1.5-hour walking tour to discover Venice’s haunted corners.

As darkness descends and the crowds of the day disappear, you will feel as if you have Venice to yourself, with only the sounds of lapping water and your group’s echoing footsteps to accompany you.

Step down narrow passageways, trace silent canals and roam empty squares as your guide recounts six intriguing ghost stories and legends. Hear about the apparitions that stalk the city’s medieval palaces, listen to tales of strange sea creatures and shiver at the story of Venice’s 15th-century butcher, Biasio, who murdered children and added their limbs to his tasty stews.

Walk over flagstones that hide ancient underground cemeteries and delve down sidestreets to stumble across architectural follies such as the Fortuny Palace and Bovolo Staircase, an ornate stone spiral staircase. Hear ghostly tales about the staircase and how it enabled a medieval nobleman to climb to his living quarters on horseback.

Delve into one of the city’s last secret passages (access subject to water levels) and, as you walk, hear dark tales of the lover who used the alley to visit his married lover under cover of night.

Then, feel your blood run cold in the Calle dei Assassini, a shadowy street once frequented by killers and criminals, as your guide recounts the brutal murders that took place here.

After around 1.5 hours, make your way back to the Rialto Bridge, where your tour finishes.

This was an exceptional and excellent tour! Our tour guide Cristina P was very friendly and personable, and a true Venetian! She was full of stories and information her English was excellent and her stories kept us all interested, especially our 15, 10 and 9 years old kids, she was so sweet and answered all their questions. The meeting place was easily found and Cristina was punctual and very animated. We walked through the backstreets and alleys of the city while being told some very interesting stories of days gone by. I would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a taste of the real Venice guided by a true venetian.

Our guide was a young woman whose name escapes me. She was wonderful. Her stories were interesting, she answered all questions knowledgeably, and just had a fun personality.

I had hurt my foot earlier on our trip and hesitated taking the walk. I told her I would have difficulty goes up and down stairs, she said it wouldn't be a problem and always waited for me to join the group if I was lagging.

I highly recommend this tour, learned lots of trivia about Venice.

This was a very fun and interesting tour. I learned a lot about Venice history and it was not at all cheesy or silly - but it was fun. I would not have seen any of the places we went if I had not done this tour. It was a very easy 90 minutes - passed quickly and was very easy walking. I definitely recommend this to any first-time visitors to Venice. Also, it's appropriate for older kids maybe 8 and older but would probably be boring for younger since there is a lot of stories about the history of Venice.
