Wachau Valley Small-Group Tour and Wine Tasting from Vienna

Small-Group Day Tour to the Wachau Valley: Melk Abbey

Leaving Vienna behind you, travel in a comfortable vehicle to the country’s best winemaking region, the Wachau Valley for a fully guided day tour. Renowned for its quality wines, stunning villages and breathtaking scenery, it is the perfect place to enjoy a day away from the city. You’ll see the whole of the Wachau Valley while learning about its fascinating culture and history and sampling local wine as well as some other delicacies like the valley’s famed apricot jams and liqueurs.

Besides the highlights, you’ll break away from the crowds to also see the more authentic and off-the-beaten-track landscapes. You also have the chance to visit the valley's oldest church, dating back to the year 987.

Arrive in the UNESCO-listed Dürnstein – a picturesque medieval town famous for being where Richard the Lionheart was held captive in 1192. There, enjoy some free time to explore the streets and the castle ruins. Afterwards you'll go for lunch in a traditional family-run Austrian wine tavern (not included).

Then, sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery while driving deep into the valley. On a relaxing 70-minute scenic Danube river cruise from Spitz to Melk, you’ll take in the Wachau Valley from yet another perspective—the middle of the majestic River Danube. Before returning back to Vienna, you'll see Melk Abbey (Stift Melk) - entrance included during the winter months, a world-famous Benedictine abbey founded in 1089. Located above the town of Melk on a rocky outcrop, this impressive monastic site boasts stunning views of the Danube river down below.

This was one of the best tours we have ever taken! From start to finish, it was an elegant way to see the countryside, taste the local cuisine and spend the day in a peaceful, relaxing environment. The fact that there were only six people on this small group tour allowed for constant interaction, and our guide, Stelios, made the day even more enjoyable. The information he provided allowed us to get a flavor of the region, and his knowledge of the food and wine we had made it a very interesting experience. The boat ride on the Danube was a nice way to cap off this day-long excursion. This small-group tour would be highly recommended for anyone who wants to escape the tourist activities for the day and just get out and explore the area outside of Vienna. Excellent tour!

A wonderfully relaxing and informative tour with our guide, Mario! The visits to Durnstein and the cruise on the Danube were particularly delightful! Highly recommended to anyone visiting Vienna.

Stelios is a great guide. Very informed of all aspects of the tour and the Wachau area. There were 4 in our group. Max tour size was 7. Lots of interaction and the itinerary was just right. Thx Stelios.

Fantastic day out in the beautiful Austrian countryside. Our guide Mario was brilliant really knowledgeable and pleasant to be around. We had so much fun and the cruise was out of this world. Mario allowed us to go at our own pace and gave us plenty of time to sit back and smell the roses. Loved it!

It was a nice experience, got to see something around Vienna and well-planned for one day, the tour guide Mario is very knowledge and attended to details. And it was 38 degree that day, I was so glad I did it instead of staying in air-conditioned hotel room. Btw, family loved the wine I bought, one more point to that!

This was a fabulous experience!. The wineries were very generous in their sample selections. When told most of the group favored red wines, opened another four bottles for us to sample after we had already had the white ones. Guides friendly, knowledgeable. Unfortunately, it rained on our Danube boat ride. The scenery was spectacular.

Our guide, Mario, was great. I was surprised to have an Italian tour guide in Wachau, but he knew his wines and was very personable. The small tour max size is 8 we had 7 and it is a nice pace with plenty of opportunity to taste local wines. The hour long cruise down the Danube was relaxing. I highly recommend Mario!
