What You Can Expect

Wachau Valley Winery Small-Group Bike Tour from Vienna

Admire the countryside of the Wachau Valley on a full-day bike tour!

Head to Vienna’s Spittelau Station in the morning to meet your guide and hop on the train to Krems in the Wachau Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this part of the Danube River Valley is renowned for its quality wines, agriculture, stunning villages and picturesque landscapes.

When you arrive, you’ll be outfitted with a bike and helmet for your leisurely paced 14-mile (23-km) bike ride. Breathe in the fresh country air and take in the spectacular scenery as you ride through charming cobblestone villages, pausing to take pictures and learn about the region’s history and culture from your guide. You’ll cycle on a mostly flat route for no more than 20 minutes at a time, with a few small inclines leading up through the villages.

Break up your bike tour with visits to two or three local wineries, where you'll relax and enjoy samples of local Austrian wine and other specialties including the region’s famed apricot jam and liqueur.

In between wine tastings, make the most of some free time to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval village of Dürnstein, one of the most-visited destinations in the Wachau region. Above the town, you’ll find the ruins of Kuenringer Castle, where King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192.

Meet with your group and guide again and head to your last stop, a family-run winery. Enjoy your own prepacked lunch or a BBQ lunch served by the winery (own expense); see sample menu below. Feel free to follow your lunch with some relaxation time by the Danube River. Perhaps go for a swim or enjoy a game of beach volleyball with other people in your group.

Finish your time in the Wachau Valley with a scenic ferry ride across the Danube River, then board the train with your guide and enjoy a glass of wine on the journey back to Vienna.

Sample Menu:
Main course (choice of one):
  • Marinated steak, bratwurst sausages and Bernerwurst (sausages with bacon and cheese) served with Austrian-style potato salad, green salad and bread rolls
  • Homemade vegetable patties and tofu sausage served with Austrian-style potato salad, green salad and bread rolls

Best trip we've been on in months!

This is a fun trip, even in the rain! We were fortunate to have the owner of the tour company as our guide. He is a delightful young man who was a fantastic guide. He's very informed about the wines of the area as well as the geology and climate that contribute to the complexity of the wines. This is a bike trip much like the locals might undertake on weekend to the Wachau Valley. It's not a marathon bike ride by any means, nor is it intended to be. The bike trail from Krems runs alongside the main road and there are many local wineries that can be accessed from this trail. We happened to run into quite a bit of rain and rain ponchos were provided. The other two members in our tour were game as were we and none of us minded getting a bit wet! It was all part of the experience. The lunch on the tour was amazing. All of us commented on how delicious the steaks and sausages were! Our tour guide also introduced us to a drink peculiar to Austria and the Wachau Valley called Sturm! If you have a chance to try it, you should. It's only available during the crush and as billed, Austrians love this stuff. After our tour, we'd mention to waiters in restaurants that we'd been to the Wachau Valley and tried Sturm! Their eyes would light up and the normal Austrian reserve would melt away. We would do this tour again in a heart beat! Thank you for a great time!

If you have time it is a MUST DO. It was so refreshing cycling through the countryside through the orchards. The homemade lunch with the local wine topped it and ofcourse the guide was full of details about the place and knew how and what to show. He made the trip all the more interesting.

Great tour, great guide, great wine and enthusiastic company. Bikes a bit 'clunky' and heavy but the terrain is mostly quite flat, so not a real problem.

The guide was great and the tour itself very interesting. The wineries we visited had great wine and the lunch was very good. Thanks for a great trip.

My husband and I had a great time on this tour. Our guide was fun and shared some really good history about both Vienna and the vineyards we toured. We were a small group which made it nice to learn about others in the group and where their travels were taking them too. I would highly recommend this tour. Do not plan anything else for your day. It is an all day event from getting to train station, the tour and getting back. If you have something planned for the evening you will feel rushed so don't.

We are in our 70's and loved this tour. Lots of young people in their 20's but we kept up with an electric bike. My suggestion to anyone over 50. Loved it. The bike baths were amazing and we toured the most beautiful small towns and had time to visit. The vineyards were beautiful, everything so very nice. It was the high light of my visit. A very must do if you travel. This is very unique and wonderful. Tour guides were so accommodating, always looking after every person. This is a five star event. Do it.

Do it. Before booking the trip I had a hard time wrapping my head around why we needed 9 hours for this tour. My recommendation is to just trust the schedule. Time will melt away as you enjoy the biking and wine. Also James, our tour guide was great.
