What You Can Expect

Wachau Valley Winery Small-Group Bike Tour from Vienna

Admire the countryside of the Wachau Valley on a full-day bike tour!

Begin your day trip at Spittelau Station in Vienna, where you’ll meet up with your guide. Climb aboard the train to Krems and arrive in the Wachau Valley, famous for its striking landscape, top wines and agriculture.

Strap on your helmet and hop on your bike for a relaxing 14-mile (23-km) ride. Take in the fresh air and learn about the region’s history from your guide as you pedal through a gorgeous pastoral backdrop.

Pull over at two or three wineries along your route to kick back with a local wine tasting. You’ll also have the chance to try the Wachau Valley’s celebrated liqueur.

Continue to the UNESCO-listed village of Dürnstein to wander for a bit on your own. Here you’ll find the ruins of Kuenringer Castle, where King Richard the Lionheart was famously held captive in the 12th century.

Reunite with your guide for a final visit to a family-run winery. Purchase a lunch served in a typical family run restaurant (sample menu available in the Itinerary) or bring your own lunch, if you prefer to do so . Afterward, relax by the Danube River, playing a round of beach volleyball or taking a cool dip.

Your trip will conclude with a brief cruise across the Danube. Then hop aboard the train and enjoy a glass of wine while traveling back to Vienna.

Need to be fit and wine was not the premium stuff.
But a good day away from cities and crowds.

This was an excellent tour and Giovanni, our tour guide was amazing! He knew the locals, walked or pedaled the extra mile and had a great sense of humour. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. It was also wonderful to visit smaller, family-run wineries, which really sets this tour apart. I would highly recommend this tour!

A great tour. Ivan our host and guide was fantastic. He is very knowledgable about wines in every detail, from growing grapes to making wine and differences of tastes. He is also great at giving us history of the region. Could not have been better.

We had such a great time on this truly beautiful ride. The roads were mostly flat, the pace was easy, the scenery was breathtaking. I'd say anyone in moderately good physical condition who can balance on a bike can do do this trip. This was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Vienna -- we even made a video of the day to share with friends. Great fun.

This tour was AMAZING! Our tour guide, Eszter, was great, very friendly, funny and informative. Our group was small, 7 people including the guide, which was nice and a highlight of the tour, getting to know everyone. The Wachau Valley region is beautiful and on the tour you bike through the heart of the valley, the towns within the valley and the vineyards. It was an incredible experience an worth a day. I would do it again the next time I return to Vienna.

It was amazing because of my tour guide, Hannes, the group I was riding with, the sites along the way, the wine tasting, and the slightly intense workout from the bike. The weather could have been better, but, even on my gray and occasionally misty day, it was a perfect tour.

This is a fun trip, even in the rain! We were fortunate to have the owner of the tour company as our guide. He is a delightful young man who was a fantastic guide. He's very informed about the wines of the area as well as the geology and climate that contribute to the complexity of the wines. This is a bike trip much like the locals might undertake on weekend to the Wachau Valley. It's not a marathon bike ride by any means, nor is it intended to be. The bike trail from Krems runs alongside the main road and there are many local wineries that can be accessed from this trail. We happened to run into quite a bit of rain and rain ponchos were provided. The other two members in our tour were game as were we and none of us minded getting a bit wet! It was all part of the experience. The lunch on the tour was amazing. All of us commented on how delicious the steaks and sausages were! Our tour guide also introduced us to a drink peculiar to Austria and the Wachau Valley called Sturm! If you have a chance to try it, you should. It's only available during the crush and as billed, Austrians love this stuff. After our tour, we'd mention to waiters in restaurants that we'd been to the Wachau Valley and tried Sturm! Their eyes would light up and the normal Austrian reserve would melt away. We would do this tour again in a heart beat! Thank you for a great time!
