Taniwha, Kiwi and Seals:
Myth, legend, and wild forces of nature all collide within Wellington's landscape. It's home to mythical beasts, is the source of wondrous legends, and has been ravaged by earthquakes and cyclones. Yet this rocky, stormy city is also home to a world-renowned conservation shelter where New Zealand's endangered wildlife is regenerating.
Legends and Storms Coast:
Walk along Wellington's beautiful waterfront, hearing Maori legends of sea monsters, or Taniwha, who once lived under the harbor's mysterious waters. Visit the statue of Kupe, the legendary warrior who landed his canoe on the Wellington shore. Experience a recreation of cyclone Giselle, the storm that caused New Zealand's worst recent maritime disaster.
Seal Coast:
Take a trip in a four-wheel drive to Red Rocks, on the Seal Coast at the south of the city. Drive across an active fault-line, over rocky beachfront, and around headlands to visit a colony of fur seals, sprawled over the rust-colored rocks that give the destination its name.
The views here are exceptional - you'll see the Tasman Sea meet the Pacific Ocean, the tumultuous waters of Cook Strait separating the North and South Islands, and the distant mountain ranges of the south.
Wildlife Lunch:
On the fringes of the city, yet seeming a world away, is the world-renowned conservation project where endangered birds like the kaka, kiwi, saddleback and bellbird, are regenerating amidst native forest. Walk along safe bush trails, visit abandoned goldmines along the way, and enjoy a delicious outdoor picnic lunch.
