What You Can Expect

3-Night Yukon Territory Tour from Whitehorse

3-Night Midnight Sun Express from Whitehorse

In the late 1800s, the discovery of gold in the Klondike attracted prospectors to this sub-arctic corner of the world. By the summer of 1897, a herd of stampeders set up a camp along the Yukon River. The rushing rapids reminded them of flowing horse manes, inspiring the name Whitehorse. Today, the largest city in Yukon, Canada, begs for further exploration by outdoor enthusiasts of all fitness levels. On this 3-day guided trip get to know the area’s scenic mountains, local vendors, artists and sled dogs. See the Itinerary below for details. Accommodation, lunches and transport are included all three days. With a maximum group of 14 passengers, enjoy personalized attention from your guide.

Day 1: Whitehorse

Arrive at the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport, where you will be greeted by your guide. Take a quick ride in your provided transport to downtown Whitehorse. Here, you can throw your bags down at your hotel and start exploring the historic buildings and attractions that are in walking distance. This is your free day to relax and see things at your own pace; all activities are at your own expense. If you’re staying in the warmer months, venture over to Yukon Fireweed Community Farmers Market in Shipyards Park. Here you can amble through a colorful selection of produce and wares from local farmers and vendors.

You can always take the edge off in the winter—or cool down in the summer—with a tour of the award-winning Yukon Brewing Company. Top off your visit with a beer that might include the Chilkoot lager and Lead Dog ale. Want to bone up on local history? Stop in the Yukon Transportation Museum to learn more about the White Pass & Yukon Route before your trip along the railway the following day, or visit the MacBride Museum for artifacts and displays about the North-West Mounted Police, predecessor of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

In the summertime, you can go on an evening guided bike tour of the city. Guides lead you along fully paved and flat trails to share the reasons they chose Whitehorse as their home. With 20 hours of sunlight in the summer months, you won’t have any trouble seeing the sights at a relaxed pace.

Day 2: Whitehorse–Skagway, Alaska–Whitehorse (L)
Gear up for a full day on the historic White Pass & Yukon Route railway. Fuel up with breakfast (own expense) before your early morning departure by motorcoach from the White Pass Depot. Take a smooth ride along the South Klondike Highway to Fraser, BC, to board the Midnight Sun Express. Be sure to bring your passport for this train excursion that takes you over the coastal mountains into the gold rush town of Skagway, Alaska.

Look out at glaciers, gorges and waterfalls from your vintage passenger coach on the 28-mile (45-km) adventure into Skagway. Hear more about gold rush history from a guide as you pass landmarks such as the Klondike Trail en route to the White Pass summit that peaks at an elevation of 2,865 feet (873 meters). Descend into Skagway for a 2-hour stay in the historic Alaskan town that includes lunch and sightseeing. When it is time to head back into Whitehorse, board a comfortable motorcoach for a 3-hour ride to arrive in time for dinner at your restaurant of choice (own expense).

Day 3: Whitehorse (L)

Start your day with a visit to the family-owned Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters. Sip on a cup of joe as you chat with the founders about roasting beans in the Yukon climate and their involvement in the Whitehorse community.

Once you've had your morning dose of caffeine, take a drive in a comfortable motorcoach to Muktuk Adventures, a ranch that is home to some 125 Yukon sled dogs and their adorable puppies. Established by a renowned musher, the solar-powered grounds welcome huskies of all ages, from pups in training to retired four-legged racers.

After some time with the dogs, depart for lunch. Your meal might include sandwiches, samples of Yukon sausages, smoked salmon, Arctic char, fruit, vegetables and nuts—all from local tastemakers. You will appreciate the filling lunch when you arrive along the shores of the impressive Yukon River for an easy walk through Miles Canyon. Along the unpaved trail, your guide shares facts about Yukon’s natural history and its gold-mining past.

On the way back into town, stop at the Yukon Artists at Work cooperative to meet some of the artists and peruse a gallery that showcases a variety of mediums. You can snap up souvenirs for yourself and others at an adjacent gift shop (own expense).

Your trip exploring the Yukon Territory concludes in the early evening at your hotel in Whitehorse. When you need a lift back to the airport, take advantage of your provided shuttle service. See Schedule for specific details about airport shuttle services.
