5 Things to Keep You, or the Relatives, Entertained
Holiday Survival Guide
Stuck at home with a dozen relatives looking to be entertained? Not this year.
Stranded in a new city with nothing to do? Never again.
We want to help you make the most of the upcoming holidays. Our "Holiday Survival Guide" is meant to give you a convenient excuse to discover a new destination without offending your hosts' hometown pride, or an excuse to kick the relatives out for a day to explore on their own. Take a tour, go to a museum, see a show - trust us, there's no better gift this holiday than the gift of experience (for your guests) and the gift of peace and quiet (for you)!
#1 Buy a city sightseeing pass
Sightseeing passes are ideal for out-of-town guests if you live in a large city such as Chicago, Boston, New York, Sydney, Paris - you get the idea. City sightseeing passes get you into top attractions, museums and sights at reduced prices (often for free) and typically include plenty of extra discounts at local restaurants, nightclubs, shopping outlets and more. Best of all they will get you - or your guests - out of the house and onto the streets for a few hours.
#2 Have a plausible exit strategy
Over the years I've spent the holidays in Dublin, Los Angeles, New York, Bangkok, Istanbul and Melbourne. That's an impressive list, to be sure. But the embarrassing thing is I didn't get a chance to explore these cities when I was traveling over the holidays. Instead I got stuck (I mean that in the nicest possible way, in case my hosts are reading this!) with friends and family for days on end. A wonderful experience in its own right, but I wish I had had an excuse to get out and explore. "I pre-booked a city tour" is a great exist strategy when you're caught in a similar bind.
#3 Take the kids to a show
Or to be more precise: Encourage your guests to take themselves and their kids to a family-friendly show or attraction. If you live in a city like Los Angeles, Orlando, Paris or Hong Kong, there are plenty of kid-friendly options that you can book online with Viator. Even better, we also have plenty of kid-friendly ideas in other cities around the world. No matter where you live, we'll help you keep the kids occupied for a few hours.
#4 Feel less guilty about having a second helping
Does everybody over-eat during the holidays? Probably. Instead of feeling guilty about it, plan to do something about it. We recommend everything from a bike tour to a ski pass to a surfing lesson, depending on your location. The main thing is simply to go outside and be active. Go on, it feels good.
#5 Give the gift of experience (rather than a neck tie, fruit cake or Spice Girls CD)
Some people are impossible to shop for. If you're one of these people - or if you're related to one of these people - then consider an utterly unique gift this year: the gift of a travel experience. Buy a Viator Gift Certificate, wrap it up in a nice box with a bow, and start getting inspired to take a trip!
