Established in 1881, and housed in this lovely historic building in the city centre since 1900, the superb Art Gallery of South Australia represents all the big names in Australian art, has an impressive international art collection (including Rodin sculptures) and hosts temporary exhibitions. It houses 38,000 works of art and you could easily return here over a couple of days. If you' re short on time peruse the Colonial State collections and Australia Federation Landscapes in the Elder Wing.
The free audio-tour of the Australian collection is very insightful, as are the free guided tours which are run twice daily. Peruse the great bookshop and indulge your other senses at the top-notch cafe with a menu inspired by the current exhibition.
The gallery is located on North Terrace in the city center - Adelaide's cultural boulevard - and is easy to reach by foot. It is between the South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide.
