Matanuska Glacier

66500 S Glacier Park Rd, Anchorage, Alaska

The Basics

Along Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway, the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site provides easy hiking trails with scenic views of the glacier. Visitors wanting to experience the glacier up close can explore the private Matanuska Glacier Park on their own in summer or as part of a guided hiking tour year-round.

Unguided glacier access is limited to only a small area of the glacier, so those who want to explore more of the glacier will need to book a guided tour. Tours are available for all ability levels, and most tours cater to the physical abilities of the group.

Lori the owner was our guide and went above and beyond to make us all feel welcome/give us tips/make sure everyone was comfortable. Matanuska Glacier was incredible - definitely go see it, and pick Lori from 907 Tours to take you! They have knowledgeable college geology students leading the hike once you get there - super cool way to learn about glaciers and all sorts of neat facts! Highly recommend

Matanuska Glacier Summer Tour
Amber picked us up at our hotel in Downtown Anchorage and drove us the two hour-ish scenic drive to the Matanuska Glacier access area, occasionally stopping for us to take some pictures. She provided helmets, crampons, gloves, walking stick, and if needed, boots, at the glacier. Amber guided and instructed us while on the glacier, for safety and to be sure we were hiking at our comfort and ability levels. We were fortunate to have a beautiful Sept. day, but she told us that even when it's gray/rainy in other areas, typically the glacier is still decent weather. We had an awesome hike experience and the scenery with the fall color, the white glacier and the blue sky was picture perfect. When we arrived at the glacier, it was earlier than other tour groups, so it wasn't very busy until we were leaving. Liked the timing! Also meant we were back to our hotel before 4 pm (but a larger group might take longer to get back to each individual hotel)!Lunch, right outside the glacier hike entrance, had a nice view of the glacier too. All around great experience!

When to Get There

Matanuska Glacier tours are available year-round, but unguided access is only available in the summer. The glacier functions as a weather hole, forcing warm air from the valley upward, meaning visitors during the summer months can expect sunniers skies and warmer temps than the valley below. Winter tours may require the use of a snowmobile to get to the base of the glacier, and it can definitely be chilly, so dress in plenty of layers.

Highlights include the Caribou Creek Recreational Mining Area, Sheep Mountain Dall Sheep Reserve, and the Lionhead, once the site of an ancient volcano.
