The views from above were great. We were a bit disappointed that it was a working zone and it was hard to get a photo without all the scaffoldings. Bathrooms were clean and the exit line was handled fairly.

Our tour guide Hermes was amazing, he was very personable and his expertise was beyond compare. He met us at our hotel which allowed us to walk the streets getting a brief history lesson before reaching the Acropolis. We had a wonderful lunch after at a rooftop restaurant, it was included with the tour. Worth the cost!

The whole experience was very memorable. It was made more special by the great service provided by our tour guide Elias. He was knowledgeable of the tour, the local market (for shopping) and he was on top of the cruise's schedule.

Tour guide was smart, sweet, and witty. She did go on some tangents but was able to redirect back to the topic and knew so much about the history of Athens and Greece. Really helped with our understanding of how the city was developed and knowing more about the Acropolis and Parthenon. We did not go to the museum but separately went to the National Archeological which we'd recommend

The Parthenon is located within the Acropolis on a hilltop in central Athens. Entry is via Dionysiou Areopagitou or Theorias, and the nearest underground train station is Akropoli.

When to Get There

The Parthenon is open from April to October, Monday 11am to 7:30pm and Tuesday to Sunday 8am to 7:30pm, and November to March, daily from 8:30am to 3pm. As with most popular tourist attractions, you would do well to arrive when the doors open to beat the crowds.

An Awkward Encounter with England

In the early 19th century, when Athens was under Turkish rule, sculptures from the Parthenon were sold to Englishman Lord Elgin. The artifacts, nicknamed the ‘Elgin Marbles’ are now on display in London's British Museum, but they remain a point of contention for the Greek government, which still insists they should be returned.
