The Basics

Explore Kintamani’s main attraction—the sacred Mt. Batur—on a sunrise trek to the peak, often complete with breakfast cooked in volcanic steam. Alternatively, cycle through UNESCO-listed rice terraces, soak in the hot springs on the shores of Lake Batur, tour a coffee plantation, watch a traditional barong dance performance, or visit one of the island’s most important directional temples, Pura Ulun Danu Batur. Many island tours stop for lunch at a restaurant overlooking Mt. Batur and Lake Batur.

Kintamani Lake & Volcano Tour
Visited some beautiful temples and the dance was so cool. The view of the volcano was okay.....I was expecting to be closer with a better view of it. Also lunch buffet was expensive and they do not take card as they do not have a good signal apparenlty, The tour guide driver was friendly and nice.

Kintamani Lake & Volcano Tour
got to see lots of different sites as there was just two of us so they took us to other places to visit such as the batik studio and the coffee plantation. Because there was only 2 of us it felt awkward not buying something from everywhere we stopped. The only downside was that we never got to choose a restaurant for lunch, it was our guides choice and for a fussy eater there was not much in the buffet i ate so it was not worth the price.

Bali Day Tour of Sunrise Watch at Kintamani, Lemukih Rice Field and Sekumpul Waterfalls
The tour and guides and driver were amazing and thoughtful!! It was very physically challenging coming back up the stairs so be prepared. It was awesome to swim in waterfall and then they have a fresh coconut water at end to replenish electrolytes which was perfect. Perfect day.

Bali Day Tour of Sunrise Watch at Kintamani, Lemukih Rice Field and Sekumpul Waterfalls
This was an excellent trip and the guides we had were super helpful and responsive. I will say that this is not for the faint of heart as the additional info will tell you. You cross rapids, you scale mountains and you walk narrow paths next to fairly steep drops. However this is my favorite tour from our trip out of the 4 tours we did. There is nothing quite unlike drinking from an actual coconut picked from a tree minutes prior.

Bali Day Tour of Sunrise Watch at Kintamani, Lemukih Rice Field and Sekumpul Waterfalls
Amazing TRIP It should not be missed. BUT there is an important note: OLD people or little kids may be its not recommended for them as you will walk a LOT and go down through very risky and scary stairs which is not well maintained also going back you have to go back through the same stairs which needs a huge power and healthy people. So be careful. Other than that it was the best trip out of our 8 chosen tours and the tour guide lady was very great.

Kintamani Lake & Volcano Tour
This was a marvellous tour! We made stops to a batik making shop, painting shop, silver jewellery shop, and the rice fields in betweens our major sight-seeing locations. The highlight was really the Barong Dance and the Volcano trips. We thoroughly enjoyed the show but the volcano was simply stunning! Not to mention, our tour guide, Sandi was very informative and hospitable.

Kintamani Lake & Volcano Tour
Great tour covering lots of distance, cultural highlights, scenic delights with some shopping opportunities thrown in. Downside was extra charge for hotel pickup paid in cash due to Tabanan location - ideally should be able to select this on purchase.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Kintamani is a must-see for adventure travelers and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • Bring a warm layer of clothing if climbing Mt. Batur; the temperatures here are significantly cooler than the coastal towns.

  • Experience the region by volcano trekking, downhill cycling, or Balinese cultural sightseeing.

  • Kintamani village is not wheelchair accessible, although limited stretches of the lakeside are.

How to Get There

Kintamani sits at least two hours from the beaches of south Bali, so many travelers visit on a day trip from Ubud. It takes time, patience, and a good handle on Indonesian to manage the infrequent “bemo” minivan services that connect the villages in the area, so most travelers opt to hire a private driver or join an organized tour.

When to Get There

If Mt. Batur is on your Kintamani agenda, it’s best to climb early in the day, before cloud cover obscures the views—you have the best chance of a spectacular sunrise during Bali’s dry season (roughly May through October). Lake Batur can get surprisingly choppy in the afternoon.

Other Sacred Sites in Bali

Alongside the imposing Mount Batur, Bali is home to a number of other sacred sites—there's Mount Agung, the highest Balinese peak which you can hike with a local guide; Lempuyang Luhur Temple, one of the oldest in Bali which gets especially crowded at full moon; and Ubud Monkey Forest, which houses three temples alongside its many inquisitive primates.
