Königin-Luise-Straße 6-8, Berlin, Germany, 14195

The Basics

What started as a kitchen garden in the late 1600s eventually grew into a world-class public garden. The Berlin Botanical Garden was officially inaugurated in 1879 to study the discipline of botany. Today the garden includes 15 greenhouses filled with plants from various regions around the world including African succulents and species from South Africa and Australia.

Visitors can tour the garden’s 11 different sections and the museum independently. Admission to the Berlin Botanical Garden is included with the Berlin Pass, which also covers such city highlights as Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom), the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, and the Pergamon Museum.

When to Get There

The Berlin Botanical Garden and Berlin Botanical Museum are both open daily. Particularly good times to visit the gardens include the spring, when many of the plants are in bloom and crowds are thinner, and the summer, when the gardens host a number of concerts. In November and December, the gardens are festively illuminated and contain 30 lighted scenes along a 1-mile-long (1.6-kilometer-long) path during the popular Christmas Garden Berlin.

The World in a Garden

The Berlin Botanical Garden sets out to bring ecosystems and plant species from all over the world together in one place. Here you’ll find plants from every corner of the earth, even those that would easily perish in the harsh Berlin weather. In the greenhouses, visitors can see delicate orchids, giant lily pads, and even magnified structures of species that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
