The Basics

Many Big Island sightseeing tours originating in Kona include stops to take in roadside lava tubes, the former royal summer residence at Hulihee Palace, the Captain Cook Monument in Kealakekua Bay, ancient Hawaiianheiau (temples) at the Place of Refuge National Historical Park, and coffee-tasting excursions. Some also visit points north and south of town—for example, to stargaze atop Mauna Kea or stroll along striking black- and green-sand beaches. Popular activities include submarine tours of local reefs, night snorkeling with manta rays, fishing charters, luaus, helicopter tours, and surfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons.

Mauna Kea Summit Sunset and Stars Free Astro Photos Hilo Kona Waikoloa Pick Up
Highlights: the beautiful colors of sunset; the Zodiac constellation tour; the crystal clear view of the Milky Was and thousands of stars. The knowledgeable tour guide was very helpful. Be sure to bring a lot of light snacks and liquids. You'll probably need these at the visitor center and at the summit. Be prepared for 5 miles of unpaved, 4-wheel drive road that privatizes more than a few bumps. The vehicles wer clean, safe, and appropriate tot he terrain.

Wonderful experience . Lots of fish, sharks and great guides. Ship wrecks and a bit of education all in the safety of a submarine.

Atlantis Submarine Kona - Hawaii Island
Very friendly staff. Safe in water experience even if you don’t know swimming. Mostly because staff is there to keep an eye on you all the time. Good for kids because of design around safety and hospitality. We saw bunch of sea life. Dolphins, one shark and several whales

Deluxe Snorkel & Dolphin Watch Aboard a Luxury Catamaran from Kailua-Kona
I would give it a five star rating had they gone to a location where there were fish! Hardly any fish were seen in the location we went to. Very disappointed. However the service is absolutely the best! Security and safety were a high priority. Perhaps for the consumer, they could find a better location for real snorkeling.

Snorkel Tour to Captain Cook Monument Kailua-Kona, Big Island
Low-key, thorough instruction and fitting of snorkel gear for small group prior to informative trip to snorkel area. Emphasis on safety, preservation of reef and geological and cultural history of area. Snorkeling site provided abundant coral formations and underwater wildlife. Snacks provided were excellent. Entire experience was laid-back and very enjoyable with friendly staff. Calm and supportive assistance for less confident clients was much appreciated.

Big Island, Kona Manta Ray Night Snorkel- Small Group
Kris and BUDDHA were the best! Safe! Small group! Lots of love and care went into our time on this trip. It was efficient, the boat trip felt safe, we got to see whales, learn about mantas, and saw Three of them during our snorkel. Can’t recommend these guys enough!

Small-Group Big Island Tour: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kona Coffee Farm
From the pick up to the drop off, it was an amazing time. Lots to see. She was very informative and so friendly. We were able to see 2 coffee farms, even with the pouring down rain. But because of the rain, the volcano that had just erupted 2 weeks prior did not have a lava flow, so we were unfortunate to not see it. Very comfortable bus and I love how it was a small group of people making it very personal.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Kailua-Kona serves as an ideal starting point for first-time visitors to the Big Island.

  • Hawaii does not recognize daylight saving time like the rest of the US (nor does the majority of the state of Arizona).

  • Dozens of hotels line the water in Kona, with a match for every budget.

  • Kona typically serves as a home base for couples and families with kids looking for a beach vacation, but is also a convenient starting point for outdoor adventurers and culture buffs looking to explore the rest of the Big Island.

How to Get There

Downtown Kailua-Kona, opposite Kailua Bay, is eight miles south of Kona International Airport. A coastal road, Route 19 (Queen Kaahumanu Highway), connects the town to points north, while Route 11 (Mamalahoa Highway) connects it to points south. Highway 190 runs up through the mountains and links the town via Saddle Road to Hilo and the island’s windward side.

When to Get There

Though Kona enjoys balmy beach weather year-round, winter (November through March) does bring slight temperature dips and occasional afternoon rains. These months, however, also coincide with some popular annual visitors: migrating humpback whales, visible on boat tours departing from the downtown pier and harbor. The annual Ironman World Championship triathlon draws huge crowds and fills hotels throughout the region for weeks leading up to the October event.

Visiting Volcanoes from Kona

The Big Island is home to five volcanoes, and you’d be remiss not to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes to see the active lava flows. Though closer to Hilo on the island’s eastern side, a number of land-based and helicopter tours depart from Kona daily. If driving, plan to spend at least two hours getting to the national park. There are two routes: the high, central Saddle Road and the slow and winding southern coastal roads. Closer to Kona, Mauna Kea offers visitors 13 telescopes and incredible stargazing with nightly programs illustrating constellations.
