South of downtown Buenos Aires, by the port, the working-class enclave of La Boca has a strong Italian flavor and plenty of artistic flair. The barrio is strongly linked to the history of the tango, and it’s also home to one of the world’s ...

This trip is a good preview of BA to allow you, if time permits, to revisit later the parts that really interest you. Our pick up was from the cruise terminal Gate 13, which is probably not a great idea as this is the main exit and at 9am in the morning is heaving with tourists and taxi touts. Our pickup at 9-30 did not arrive and we eventually found a rep. at 9-50. The minibus didn't arrive until 10.10-so not a great start!
Then it got better. The bus was air-conditioned and the young guide spoke good English. We had a half hour stop in the Plaza de Mayo to see the Presidential Palace and visit the Cathedral. We drove through the Recoleta District with its elegant buildings and famous cemetery Eva Peron et al. .We passed along the magnificent boulevards interspersed with beautiful parks and former residences of the affluent- now mainly hotels and embassies. In the area of La Boca, there were two further stops to see the Boca Juniors famous football stadium and the Caminito district with its street artists and gaily coloured former fishermen's houses. The tour finished passing by the Puerto Madero, which is the restored and gentrified former port area with its converted original warehouses complemented by modern high rise apartments. The tour finished in the shopping area- Avenida Florida. A bit poor they didn't return us to the pickup point,

We enjoyed the tour and would recommend it. There were a few things that could have been better. We waited for 30 min for a couple at one stop who got off and did not return. I can see 10 minutes, but 30 was too long. We stopped at a souvenir shop in Boca for 15 min that was a waste of time. Then we only had 30 minutes at Caminito where we SURE could have used those extra 45 minutes. It was not near enough time.
We got back after 6 and the Recoleta cemetery closes at 5:30. Had we known that, we would have toured the cemetery BEFORE we took the bus tour. Now we have to take another 1/2 day to go back to that area to see what we really wanted to see.
The guide was good and the bus was comfortable. I have done the hop on hop off bus and liked this much better.

1. The city tour was just okay. It picked us up late - over an hour later than the time we were told. It was quite hard to understand the tour guide as the microphone was very crackly, and the tour was in Spanish, Portuguese and English. We got to leave the bus at two points - 20 mins at Plaza Libertad, and 40 mins at Caminito in La Boca. I'd recommend not bothering with the city tour, and doing a walking tour elsewhere. At the end we were dropped off at one of three spots - not at the hotel! This was a bit annoying.

2. The Tango show picked us up on time. The food was okay, the service at Tango Porteno was very very good, and the show entertaining, although there was singing which was completely in Spanish. An enjoyable night. We were dropped off at the same place we had been picked up from.

3. Tigre Delta river cruise - this was the best of the three parts of this deal. We were again picked up from the hotel over an hour later than told, but our guide, Laura, was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and her English was clear. The trip included a stop at the church at San Isidro, and then onwards to Tigre. Very cute houses and interesting background. I'd recommend this as a day trip. Again, they didn't return us to our pickup point, but Laura was helpful in finding a location to drop us off close to where we wanted to go.

This tour was good for getting an overview of the city. Very knowledgable guide and we had the opportunity to stop for pictures in the right places: Palacio Rosado, Boca Juniors and Caminito.
