Cairo is best known for its cultural attractions—the Pyramids of Giza, resplendent mosques and centuries-old palaces—but it's also a great base for getting outdoors to experience Egypt in an active way. Here are your options.
Giza Safaris
You can’t visit Cairo without seeing the UNESCO-listed Giza Pyramids, an experience that can be combined with either a camel safari into the desert to watch the sunset (the perfect postcard image of the pyramids often includes a camel or two) or a quad bike adventure for a race around the great pyramids, with a chance to conquer some desert sand dunes along the way.
Nile River Cruises
The Nile River is as synonymous with Egypt as the great Pyramids, and it would be a shame to leave Cairo without spending at least a few hours on the world's longest river. One popular option, especially if you’re pressed for time, is a sunset dinner cruise, many of which include a cultural performance with Sufi tanoura and belly dancing. To experience the Nile by day (or at sunrise or sunset), hop aboard a traditional Egyptian felucca for a sailing excursion and you'll see the Cairo skyline from the water and capture some unobstructed photos of the city.
Walking Tours
Cairo brims with amazing archaeological sites and architectural wonders, so walking tours make for a great way to see the highlights while putting your finger on the city's pulse. During a day spent on foot in the UNESCO-listed Old City, you'll pass ancient city gates, 15th-century mosques and colorful modern-day bazaars where handicrafts, perfumes, spices and antiques are sold.
