Heyward-Washington House Tours

A noble grandfather clock ticks the time in the drawing room of the Heyward-Washington House in Charleston, a veritable time portal to the 1700s. The two-story brick building constructed in 1772 takes its hyphenated name from its original owner Thomas Heyward, Jr, whose "John Hancock" appears on the Declaration of Independence, and George Washington, who stayed at the home on a visit in 1791.

Inside, visitors can touch the same banister as the country’s first president and explore rooms outfitted with Charleston-crafted antebellum décor including a four-poster bed and the ornate glass paneled “Holmes Bookcase.” The separate and original 1740s kitchen, carriage house, slave quarters and garden of traditional Lowcountry plants run alongside the home.

The Heyward-Washington House and the Joseph Manigault House, built in 1803 and just a mile away, are both owned and managed as historical attractions by the Charleston Museum.
