Built in 1815 by Archibald Frew, and located just minutes away from Uptown Charlotte, the Historic Rosedale Plantation is considered one of North Carolina’s finest examples of federal-style architecture. Explore the fully restored house and expansive grounds and gardens, and learn about life on an antebellum plantation.
The interior of the 15-room home can be seen only on a docent-led tour, which discusses plantation life as well as architecture and decorative arts. Furnished with period pieces, the house retains some of its former touches, such as pieces of the original wallpaper and original woodwork in the parlors. Outside, you can wander around the plantation’s gardens and big tree museum, where you’ll find several historic Treasure Trees.
Most visitors spend at least an hour at the Historic Rosedale Plantation.

Smoking and vaping aren’t allowed anywhere on the plantation.
The Historic Rosedale Plantation sits in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood, around 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) northeast of the city center. If you’re driving, take Highway 29 to the plantation—there’s free parking on-site. Bus 11 also stops nearby, and taxis and rideshares are plentiful.
The plantation is typically open Tuesday through Sunday. Check the website for the tour schedule.
The Historic Latta Plantation is also located in Charlotte. Previously a cotton plantation, it’s now a living history farm. The complex contains the original house, several outbuildings, and live animal farms, along with historic reenactors in period clothing. Tour the house and grounds, stroll the hiking trails, and stop by the nature center.
