The capital of the Dominican Republic and oldest European city in the Americas, Santo Domingo is rich in history and culture. If you only have one day in Santo Domingo, start by exploring the Zona Colonial (Old Town), a 12-block historic area located in the heart of the city. Wander the narrow, cobblestone streets of the Old Town past historical buildings, monuments, forts, churches, museums, shops, parks and lovely bougainvillea-filled courtyards and plazas.
The Old Town in Santo Domingo centers on the Parque Colón (Columbus Park), the city’s main plaza and a favorite local gathering spot where you’ll also find the oldest cathedral in the Americas.
