Private tour of Dunedin, gardens, and coastal train ride
, Jan 2020
We were the only ones to book this fantastic tour. It was so neat; having a private driver all day! We shared a lot in common with our guide. Especially the love of the country, gardens and people.
The train ride along the coast was delightful. We ate on the train. Best coffee.
Depot was wonderful!
Combine top Dunedin experiences into a single day of sightseeing on a Port Chalmers shore excursion that includes a city tour, Larnach Castle Garden, and a 90-minute ride on a coastal train through the scenic Otago Peninsula. A flexible mix of guided and independent activities gives you the best of both worlds: you’ll get a fascinating, guided introduction to Dunedin highlights, but enjoy the freedom to explore on your own.
Dunedin Shore Excursion: Small-Group Tour of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula
, Feb 2020
Scot was great and very informative. I would suggest that a short refreshment break would be beneficial.
The weather on the day of our tour was awful with heavy rain. Not much Viator can do about the weather
Great tour with great tour guide Glen. He was friendly, knowledgeable about the area and presented it well. It was a small group and we had plenty of photo opportunities and we were lucky to have seen wildlife.
Wonderful back to nature tour. Our guide is working on his Master's in Wildlife, and was very knowledgeable. We think his name was Scott.
Tour was easily accessible once off the ship, and very good value. Highly recommend!
Swap the cruise port for the Dunedin countryside on a half-day shore excursion that includes the Otago Peninsula. Your sightseeing tour covers highlights of the city center such as the Dunedin Railway Station, then travels to several village suburbs, stopping en route at scenic lookouts and for a beachside view of basking sea lions. Enjoy the personalized attention from your guide on this small-group tour, limited to 19 people.
Our tour guide was great. He was very kbowledgeable and told us all about the flora and fauna. We really enjoyed seeing the penguins and seeing the landscape and the headlands by the beach. The castle grands were beautiful as well.
This was a great excursion from our cruise on Celebrity Solstice in January 2020. It was a small group tour (18) and the meeting point was just a few paces from the ship's docking area. The thing that really made it such an interesting and enjoyable tour was our driver/escort/leader/host Ben. His wealth of knowledge about New Zealand in general; the areas we visited and particularly the birds we saw; the ecosystem and reasons why certain birds were in danger of extinction and what was being done/had been done to reduce the risks. He was passionate about the conservation of these birds and in particular the yellow eyed penguins. The sanctuary for these was amazing but sadly, my husband is disabled and we couldn't participate in the walk looking for these lovely creatures in their secure habitat. However, we were able to see some who were being looked after in a little "nursing home" for various reasons. They are lovely birds unique to New Zealand with a really cute call. There is a terrace at reception where you can get cold or hot drinks and a shop where you can buy souvenirs and read even further information and look at photographs about the history of the privately-owned sanctuary and its work and mission statement. All the information that Ben shared with us in the bus and at our stops was delivered in a lively and often amusing way and he was able to give some very full and interesting answers to any questions we asked. We had plenty of interesting stops and a one hour stop at Larnach Castle for lunch where there was plenty of outside seating in the extensive gardens in the sun. Unfortunately we were unlucky with our final stop at the Royal Albatross Centre as none of its residents put in an appearance and we had to dash back to the bus as the weather broke and we experienced monsoon-like rain, thunder and lightning! A wonderful day out and an enormous thank you to Ben, undoubtedly the host with the most!! Highly recommended.
Dunedin is a city full of culture and history and also conveniently close to wildlife reserves and unspoilt nature. See both sides of the city in one day on this small-group tour. Take in the central sights, such as the Railway Station and the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street. Stroll through the manicured gardens of Larnach Castle on the way to the Otago Peninsula, home to albatross, seals, penguins, and sea lions.
Dunedin Shore Excursion: Taieri Gorge Railway and City Sightseeing Guided Tour
Underwhelming but professional
, Jan 2020
The tour was run very well. Cruise came in at 9:00 am, so we were a bit law to the station, but the train was held. Received a two hour of Dunedin after train ride and Billy made every effort to show us everything in the town that he thought was interesting. However, if you are a world traveller, the reality is, there just wasn’t that much to see. (eg. the local university, churches that are 80 years old, etc), and the gorge has about 8 minutes of interesting vistas.
We really enjoyed this excursion. The train trip is quite enjoyable with very pretty scenery. On our excursion food was available for purchase on the train (that is, not included) and it was fine. You are asked to trade seats with the persons opposite you for the return train trip; this is a win-win and also only fair. The city tour after the train trip was unexpectedly thorough and informative. The Dunedin area is quite pretty and the tour guide was humorous and informative. We've done well over 100 shore excursions and this was one of the best.
Board the Taieri Gorge Railway for a legendary trip on this train-lover’s shore excursion from Dunedin, which includes a 2-hour sightseeing tour by coach. You’ll journey by rail through stunning scenery surrounding the Taieri River, passing over century-old viaducts. Then see Otago University, the Dunedin Botanical Garden, stately homes and other historical sites of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula before you’re returned to the Dunedin port.
Excellent tour. Just about the right amount of time on board the train. Our guide Dave kept us informed and amused on the scenic journey. Plenty to see along the coast railway in this beautiful country. Recommended.
The Seasider is a scenic railway route between Dunedin and Waitati, affording spectacular views along the Pacific coast. On this tour, enjoy a hassle-free experience with prepaid tickets and soak up the scenery on-board the 90-minute round-trip train ride. Along the way, admire views of the Otago Peninsula, including Otago Harbour, Port Chalmers, Careys Bay, and Blueskin Bay.
This tour really did a good job of covering all the highlights of Dunedin. The refuge for the yellow eyed penguins was especially interesting. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars was the mini bus itself had relatively small windows and not very comfortable seats.
Travel with a small group to explore the city of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. Get personalized attention from your guide and enjoy an intimate atmosphere with your fellow travelers as you hit all the highlights, such as Larnach Castle, Penguin Place, the Octagon, the Dunedin Rail Station, the University of Otago, and more. Along the way, listen to engaging commentary from your guide and enjoy the opportunity to ask questions.
Full-Day Dunedin Tour with Larnach Castle & Gardens, Speight's Brewery
Full-Day Dunedin Tour with Larnach Castle & Gardens, Speight's Brewery
, Feb 2020
We arrived in Dunedin on a rainy, foggy day. Our tour guide Josh was outstanding with his narratives and driving in the foggy conditions. We enjoyed our visit to the castle, but missed the great views due to the weather. Our tour of Speight's Brewery was also well done. It is always great to see a piece of history in the cities we visit. I highly recommend this tour.
Our bus driver was very helpful and spoke very clearly. He spoke about all the special places and presented historical facts of Dunedin. He was enthusiastic about Dunedin since it is his home. The castle tour was very interesting and well presented by the Scottish volunteers. The story of the family connected to the castle made the visit that much more intriguing. The tour of the brewery hit the spot with a couple glasses of COLD beer at it’s completion. Wish we could have had a longer time to see the train station. The steepest Street in the world was something that could have been looked at just from the bus. Good job!
Explore Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula on a full-day shore excursion that includes Larnach Castle & Gardens and Speight’s Brewery, two of the region’s top destinations. With an experienced guide to lead the way, you’ll discover the fascinating city of Dunedin, step back in time at New Zealand’s only castle, then visit a historic working brewery with deep southern roots. This 6.5-hour tour includes all entrance fees and guided tours, as well as pickup and drop-off at Port Chalmers.
Ben was extremely knowledgeable about the local area, economy and wildlife. As it's a small group in a smaller vehicle he takes you on the smaller roads alongside the bay to get close up to the birds and a very confident sea lion. Recommended.
Peer at rare yellow-eyed penguins and visit nesting grounds of the northern royal albatross during a full-day tour of the Otago Peninsula and Dunedin. Spend your morning sightseeing in Dunedin’s city center, including highlights of the Octagon, followed by a visit to the gardens of Larnach Castle, with the option to go inside and buy lunch. In the afternoon, immerse in the natural beauty of the Otago Peninsula and the scenic coast along Taiaroa Head. Numbers are limited to 19 people to allow for personalized attention from your informative guide.
Shore Excursion: Full-Day Ships Shore Excursions from Dunedin
Hop on hop off and Llanarch Castle
, Feb 2020
Upgraded to include visit to Llanarch Castle. Excellent guide really informative and gave just the right time to see all. Hop on hop off really good although care as busses less frequent as day progresses.
Make the most of your time at port in Dunedin with one of these customizable Dunedin shore excursions. Get your bearings at your own pace on a hop-on hop-off bus tour, or choose between outings to Larnach Castle and Gardens and the magnificent Taieri Gorge Railway. If desired, the shore excursions can be combined with some of Dunedin’s top sites, including Speight’s Brewery or the Olveston Historic Home. All shore excursions include pickup and drop-off at Port Chalmers.
A very comfortable train journey. The staff were very good. The commentary was helpful. Booking was easy and the staff in the station were pleasant and professional. The scenery is wonderful and as you cannot get there by road it was nice to see a bit of wilderness before it is all gone. A nice rest from driving. The buffet car has a good selection of snacks and drinks.
The trip itself is wonderful but we had to rebook via our cruise ship because there was not enough time to get to Dunedin railway station for the train.
Booking via the cruise line the train leave from the cruise terminal?
This is not entirely clear when you book.
The train trip was good. Commentary on the trip was really interesting. The problem we had however, was that there had been large weather issues and the train was late. Didn't leave in the morning for about 30 minutes, then we had to sit in a couple of places to allow the earlier train to get 20 minutes ahead. On the way home there was a signalling issue that made us even later. Total about 1hour 30 minutes late.
In saying this ,however, the crew and staff were extremely accommodating in making sure our shuttle transport back to our Cruise ship was waiting for us, even tho they were supposed to finish earlier.
Take a scenic round-trip through the wilds of New Zealand’s South Island on this Taieri Gorge railway journey from Dunedin. With informative and entertaining live commentary on board, gain insight into the railway’s construction and the challenges faced by the engineers. Enjoy sightseeing stops en route and discover top attractions around Dunedin.
When your cruise ship docks in Dunedin, take a full-day excursion that combines two South Island highlights: a scenic round-trip ride on the Taieri Gorge Railway, and an afternoon tour of the Otago Peninsula. The train steams from Dunedin to Pukerangi, passing through Taieri Plains and Taieri Gorge, and stopping en route for photo ops. Then dig your toes into the sand of Otago’s beaches and keep a lookout for marine wildlife.
A great day in Dunedin and with our guide Lucy. She took us to many points of interest in Dunedin. loved the beach where we encountered sea lions up close and personal. We enjoyed the beautiful grounds of Larnach castle and had a lovely lunch. On to another beach. I definitely recommend this excursion.
We found Lucy's tour after another tour that we had booked got cancelled. We are SO glad our other tour got cancelled!!! We got to see SO much more than we would have seen with the other tour! Lucy was AMAZING!!!! She showed us all around Dunedin (downtown, a scenic overlook,Baldwin Street, Lanarch Castle, train station, etc), the Otago Peninsula, and several beautiful beaches (including some that were off the beaten path from tour groups and stunningly beautiful!). We saw fur seals and even a penguin on the beach!! Tunnel Beach is DEFINITELY worth the short hike!! Truly a day we will never forget...perfect that it was New Year's Eve!!! Thank you Lucy!!!!
This was probably our favorite tour in New Zealand. Tour provided a nice overview of the area. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Lucy, our guide, was very personable and accommodating. We highly recommend her and this excursion.

Cruise Ship Excursion Wildlife and Culture tour on the Otago Peninsula
Cruise Ship Wildlife Adventure Tour
, Jan 2020
What an amazing tour. The tour we took was the Cruise Ship Wildlife Adventure of 5 hours. Lyndon, tour guide and owner of Horizon Tours was amazing. His knowledge of the area wildlife and environment was so informative. We went to areas where sea lions were resting on the beach in areas that were not visited by most tour companies. Our cruise we saw many seals and albatross. Diane his wife prepared a lunch that we ate in the forest listening to native birds and learning about the vegetation. Lyndon's knowledge of the Maori heritage was shared with us as we visited Maori sites. Yes I would take this tour again and highly recommend to anybody. Steve C
Awesome tour! Lyndon picked us up from the port and we set out on this amazing tour with him. He kept us engaged during the car ride with his trivia and stopped at some beautiful spots for photos. He shared with us his knowledge of Maoi culture, NZ native birds and plants. We saw Seals socking in the sun on a white sand beach and Albatross. We covered the Otago Peninsula on Land and also by sea. Lyndon and his wife planned an amazing lunch for the group in the middle of the forest, so serene and quiet. We wanted to see the Worlds steepest road but it was not part of the tour. Lyndon, however, took a detour to make sure we don't miss it. I definitely recommend this tour.
Our Horizon Tour of the Otago Peninsula was excellent. They didn’t cram us into the nice van, purposely leaving some empty seats. Our guide, Linden, was a company owner and was SO knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. We saw fur seals, sea lions, albatross and a slew of other birds and critters. We stopped for a wonderful lunch at a secluded spot where we could listen to the birds and learn about some unusual vegetation. (Note to Diane: There was plenty of food and lots of delicious choices 😀).
This was our VERY favorite tour of our New Zealand trip.
The Otago Peninsula is renowned for its diverse wildlife and rich Maori heritage. Discover both on this shore excursion from Dunedin, which takes in the highlights of Dunedin town, as well as the coastal scenery. Set sail on a boat cruise to Taiaroa Head and look out for wildlife including albatross, penguins, seals, and sea lions; visit Maori landmarks and learn about traditional Maori foods and medicines; and enjoy a picnic lunch in a local beauty spot.
It was a beautiful day in Dunedin. We met our guide Glenn and he gave us a great tour of the town, but when we got to the train station we learned there was a derailment and we wouldn't go any further on our excursion. Glenn did a good job of showing us the other sites but disappointed we didn't get to experience the train.
Ride the Taieri Gorge Railway on a round-trip route from Dunedin to Pukerangi, and take a guided tour of the Otago Peninsula by minivan in the afternoon. The train steams through vivid South Island landscapes including the Taieri Plains and Taieri Gorge, stopping en route for photo ops plus a leg stretch in Pukerangi. Then dig your toes in the sand at Otago’s gorgeous beaches and keep a lookout for oceanic wildlife. Upgrade to include a gourmet boxed lunch.
Dunedin Shore Excursion: Small-Group Tour of Dunedin
Loved this tour.
, Jan 2020
Great tour of Otago Peninsula and Dunedin city sights. Our guide Scott was knowledgeable and fun. Scott pointed out several birds that we would not have seen otherwise and certainly would not have known what they were without his help. Highly recommend this tour that included time at the railway station - go upstairs to the art gallery, and a walk on the beach to see sea lions.
Venture to Dunedin and escape the crowds when your ship pulls into port. You'll visit beaches on the scenic coastline and learn about the impressive architecture of New Zealand's oldest city on this shore excursion. Stop at several lookouts and search for wildlife in the Otago Peninsula.

Enjoyable worry-free tour!
, Feb 2020
We truly enjoyed this tour with our driver Les! It was so nice (especially for my husband since he does all of the driving) having Les navigate the challenging streets of Dunedin and showing us so many highlights that we would not have seen. Les is very knowledgeable and kept our interest the whole time. We especially loved seeing Signal Hill, Botanical Garden and driving along the coast. Thank you so much!
Off the beaten track tour of beautiful Otago countryside and Dunedin city highlights including beaches and Otago University. Our driver Russ was most obliging and informative and had a wonderful sense of humour.
We had a beautiful tour in a comfortable van with 10 tourists in all. Russ took us to scenic overlooks, the train station, steep street, the university and pointed out other buildings along the way. He answered many various questions, his mic worked and everyone could hear the commentary along g the way. He stopped in the shopping district for drop off as we returned to Port Chalmbers.

Five star. Excellent tour. Kim was our guide. He was relaxed, calm, knowledgeable and kept everyone on time and organised. Really good balance between sights and stop offs. We had fabulous weather. The coach was great. Clean, clear windows and comfortable. Good stop offs at the lookout, house, octagon and station. Would recommend. Thanks Kim, great tour.

Taste of Dunedin City Sights and Peninsula Nature Cruise Ship Shore Excursion
I enjoyed it all.
, Jan 2020
James out tour guide was very friendly, informative and passionate about the wildlife. James went over and above our expectations and looked after us very well including giving us snacks and drinks during our midday break. I would recommend this tour especially to wildlife enthusiasts.
We were a little unsure as to whether we should do a tour of Dunedin city or the peninsula. I am so glad we chose this tour it was excellent. James has a wealth of knowledge about the wild life and his culture. The van was immaculate and very comfortable. He even provided coffee and snacks. Do yourself a favour and book this tour
