Royal Mile

Royal Mile, Edinburgh

The Basics

Because it penetrates the very heart of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town and is home to so many of the city’s star attractions, including St Giles’ Cathedral, the Scotch Whisky Experience, and Camera Obscura, the Royal Mile is a staple on Edinburgh sightseeing tours. Classic walking tours, Harry Potter–themed tours, and tours of the underground Real Mary King’s Close all cover portions of the Royal Mile, as do hop-on hop-off and ghost bus tours. Visitors based in Glasgow can take day tours to the city to see Edinburgh’s biggest attractions, among them, of course, the Royal Mile.

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
Stephanie was a very knowledgeable and engaging tour guide and the 2.5 hour tour took us around the royal mile with different historical places and stories. The tour finished at the castle with a short tour and free time to explore. This was a small tour of 6 people at a steady pace and me and my teenager really enjoyed it. The real life stories of the people of Edinburgh was my favourite part. Thanks for a great tour Stephanie!

Tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. I liked the listening device because I could hear all that was being said even with the wind and crowded areas. I believe the guide was named Veni.

Edinburgh City Walking Tour, Discover Old Town, Royal Mile with a Local Expert!
Rishi was a great guide. The crowds were hard to maneuver but he made it work. Very informative and fun to talk to. I have never been disappointed with a Viator tour and this one met all my expectations. I wish I had more time to explore more of Edinburgh.

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
Stephanie was superb! She was informative, animated and knew her history. The Royal mile is busy, there are other tour groups, street performers and people in the pedestrian street. Stephanie used visuals, maneuvered our small group around the area and was very effective in communicating using the talking device. It was a great tour!

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
The Royal Mile tour was really great. Charles was an amazing source of knowledge and history. We had toured the castle the day before without a guide. Charles was such a great guide, we decided to tour the castle again to hear the history and information - it was well worth it.

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
Our guide was Leslie who was fantastic. Her knowledge of the city’s history and explanation of a few Scottish idiosyncrasies made for a great tour. The fact that we were in a relatively small group meant that we could move about much easier than the larger groups. Also, the headphones were great - especially for people who struggle with their hearing. Fascinating stories, well told and a chance to find out the history of this great city.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes as some surfaces are uneven and sloping.

  • To avoid an uphill slog, start at Edinburgh Castle and walk downhill to Holyrood Palace, then use public transport or a taxi to get back up.

  • The cobblestoned sections of the street can cause difficulty for some wheelchairs, strollers, and mobility devices.

When to Get There

The Royal Mile is a much-frequented thoroughfare, and during the annual Edinburgh Festival in August, it is packed with visitors. If you can stomach the crowds, the atmosphere is truly something special with curbside entertainment courtesy of buskers and street performers.

Things to See on the Royal Mile

Many of Edinburgh’s most famous landmarks are situated on the Royal Mile. In addition to the palace and castle at either end, you’ll find other centuries-old landmarks such as St Giles' Cathedral, the Mercat Cross, and Canongate Kirk. It’s not all dusty old attractions, though—the Royal Mile is also the setting for the contemporary Scottish Parliament Building, a striking 2004-built concrete structure whose abstract shapes and forms take inspiration from such diverse references as Scottish landscapes and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s paintings.
