The Basics

Stirling Castle ranks high on the agenda for visitors to Scotland. Many visitors explore the castle on day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow, which typically also visit other Scottish Highlands highlights such as Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Loch Ness, Glen Coe, and whisky tasting experiences. Travelers should book castle tickets in advance to avoid long lines and sold-out dates.

Incredible, educational, fun day
Cameron was the best tour guide ever! He had so many amazing historical stories, he was so knowledgeable. He took us to some incredible places and always had great tips about where to go for the best experience. It was a perfectly planned day with the perfect amount of time to enjoy each stop.

A worthwhile trip

Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies from Edinburgh
This was one of the best tours we've done during our UK trip (and we've done a fee by now). This was largely due to Gary and the way he made the trip informative, yet enjoyable. Gary was patient and professional with a bus load of quiet tourists and gave several humorous anecdotes that made the trip all the more enjoyable. The boat trip on the Loch was beautiful and wandering through Stirling Castle was a real highlight.

Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and Stirling Castle from Glasgow
The guide was very knowledgeable and funny, with a store of Glasgow history as well as jokes. The impromptu stop for the “hairy coos” was great, complete with carrots! Stirling Castle became alive before we even saw it with Robert’s tales of the royal family who lived there. I would definitely recommend this tour for an enjoyable day in West Scotland.

Tour guide Steve Welsh was great top notch. Only thing stopping 5 star was not enough time in Stirling Castle. Need 1/2 more at castle and 1/2 less Loch. Did tour guide at castle which was great but after tour ended only had 15 mins and could not see all the castle.

Stirling Castle & Loch Day Tour
Despite a little rain at the beginning, Ross gave us a wonderful tour. We met Hobby & Hamish, saw some morning swimmers in Loch Lomond , and took an informative tour of Stirling Castle. We might have all the Queen Mary’s and King James straight. Thank you for a great last day in Scotland.

Rosslyn Chapel, Dunfermline Abbey and Stirling Castle Day Tour from Edinburgh
We had a great day trip from Edinburgh to Dunfermline Abbey, Stirling Castle and Rosslyn Chapel even though it rained all morning! In true Scottish fashion the sun came out as we made our way to the beautiful Rosslyn Chapel. We enjoyed being able to visit these three important historical sites. Our driver Graham was cheerful and informative.

Loch Lomond, Stirling and Whisky Tour from Edinburgh
Steven B was great tour guide and Sterling Castle was magnificent. Weather made Loch portion of trip a little harsh, so wish we could have stayed a little longer in Sterling. But brilliant trip and highly recommend.

How to Get There

The easiest way to get to the castle is via guided tours from Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Greenock. During busy summer months, the parking lot at Stirling Castle often fills to capacity; travelers can also use the Castleview park-and-ride service (located on the western outskirts of town off junction 10 on the M9). Alternatively, ride the train from Edinburgh or Glasgow (both take under an hour). The 20-minute walk from the train station, though not long, is somewhat steep.

When to Get There

July and August attract the biggest crowds. Be prepared for varying weather, even in summer; rain and chilly temperatures are common, and parts of the castle complex, such as the Queen Anne Gardens, leave visitors open to the elements.

Stirling’s Links to Scottish Heroes

For “Braveheart” fans, Stirling Castle will be forever linked with one name: William Wallace. From the castle, you can see the National Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig hill, where in 1297, Wallace and his troops prepared to fight off the invading English army. Robert the Bruce, known for his decisive victory over the English at nearby Bannockburn in 1314, is also commemorated at Stirling Castle. Look for a statue of the sword-carrying King of Scots on the castle’s esplanade.
