Only 15 miles (24 km) from the center of Berlin, Potsdam makes a great day trip.
Once a small insignificant market town in the 17th century, Frederick William I who was Duke of Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg decided this would be a good place for his hunting lodge. From then it became the center of the Prussian royal court and in the 18th century, Frederick the Great began building the magnificent royal palaces we see in Potsdam today.
