Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau) Tours

Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau)
Located within the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau) packs a lot into a small area, with two popular beaches, barbecue areas, hiking trails, stunning scenery, and interesting geological formations. Sharp Island is easily accessible, and is one of the most popular islands in the Sai Kung area.

The Basics
Most visitors come here to enjoy the beaches, swim, snorkel, fish, and to explore the unusual geological formations. Both Hap Mun Bay Beach and Kiu Tsui beach offer a full range of facilities. There are also hiking trails on the island, including one that connects the two beaches. Geologically, Sharp Island is known for its “pineapple bun” shaped rocks, as well as a tombolo (tidal spit) that connects it to nearby Kiu Tau Islet. During low tide, visitors can walk across the tombolo.

It’s easy to visit Sharp Island independently, or join a sightseeing tour that stops at Sharp Island, in addition to other nearby islands like Yim Tin Tsai and Jin Island. You can also take a tour focused on the diverse geological features of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, a towel, and sun protection.
  • Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes if you plan to hike or cross the tombolo.
  • It’s a good idea to bring insect repellent, especially in the summer.
  • Beach facilities include restrooms, changing rooms, and showers.
  • Lifeguards are only present in the summer.
  • Be sure to ask about the final ferry pickup time from Sharp Island, as schedules can vary.

How to Get There
Sharp Island is about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from Sai Kung Pier. Take the MTR to Diamond Hill Station, then bus 92 to Sai Kung town. From Hang Hau Station, take minibus 101M; from Choi Hung Station, take minibus 1A. From Sai Kung town, catch a boat from Sai Kung Pier and get off at either Kiu Tsui Bay or Hap Mun Bay. It’s also possible to kayak to Sharp Island from Sai Kung.

When to Get There
Sharp Island can be visited year-round. It’s a popular destination on weekends and public holidays, and can get very crowded, especially Hap Mun Bay. Visit during the week for smaller crowds. Visitors who wish to cross the tombolo should check the tide schedule.

Geology of Sharp Island
Sharp Island is a good example of a wave erosion landscape, with plenty of bays and headlands. The “pineapple bun” rocks on Sharp Island are made of quartz monzonite that has been weathered and eroded so that irregular cracks formed, making it look like the popular local snack.
