Iceberg Classic

Ilulissat is Greenlandic for "icebergs". And the icebergs is the experience of many tours. The beautiful ice is also why the Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This cruise takes you to one of the most beautiful places in the area; the mouth of the icefiord, where a large submercial moraine beaches the large icebergs in rows - before they embark on their journey out into the Atlantic. The glacier producing icebergs is called Sermeq Kujalleq. It is located approx. 70 km inside the ice fjord, where all sailing is impossible. It is the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere and the world's fastest ice stream with 40 meters per day. Ice production is 46 cubic kilometres per year (equivalent to U.S. annual water consumption). The largest icebergs are 1.5 cubic kilometres.   There is only one thing to say - this natural phenomenon and these icebergs has to be seen.

Whale Safari

The humpback whale is one of the animals in the world that moves furthest. They come to the Disko Bay in the summer to eat large amounts of krill and small fish. The whale typically comes from Haiti and Puerto Rico, where they breed in winter. Humpback whales can grow up to 15 meters long and can weigh up to 30 tons. The humpback whale is the whale we usually see in the Disco Bay, and it is easily recognizable on the beautiful tail. To experience these giants of the sea at close range is almost a spiritual experience that overwhelms many.

Ilimanaq Settlement Visit

South of Ilulissat there is a settlement called Ilimanaq / Claushavn. This is also just south of the Kangia Icefiord that is on the Unesco heritage site. To get to Ilimanaq we first need to sail past all the big icebergs that covers the whole tour. It is a beautiful cruise of appx 45 minutes, depending on the ice, wind and weather in general. Once we are in Ilimanaq, our captain and guide will walk with you in the settlement and tell you of life here, and the history of the area.

Deep Sea Fishing

Catch your own dinner in the pure arctic cold water. Fishing has always been - and still is - important for the Greenlandic people. And therefore a fishing trip is one of the most authentic things you can experience. The kind of fish we go for will vari with the season. In June, it is possible to catch “ammassatter” (small salmon fish that can be shovelled in the boat), later in the summer, there are good opportunities for cod and trout. There are simple fishing gear on the boat, but it is also possible to bring your own fishing rod. Fishing licenses can be redeemed here – print this and go to the post office in Ilulissat, and they can help you.

Oqaatsut - Rodebay - Settlement Visit

Experience the smallest village in Disko Bay with approx. 40 inhabitants. It is beautifully situated - 15 km north of Ilulissat - on a small peninsula at the foot of a large mountain. The Dutch name Rodebay is from the whaling time, and means either Red Bay or resting place. The place has been inhabited since the 1700s and was given the status as settlement in 1877. It is exciting to see how a small Greenlandic society works with the most basic modern needs , as we know from the Western world. Drinking water, electricity, Internet, TV, renovation, school, church, shop and several other things that is the basis for the residents of the village.
