Lake Thun (Thunersee)

Thun Im Berner Oberland, Bernese Oberland

The Basics

Lake Thun is one of two lakes that give the town of Interlaken (meaning “between lakes”) its name; the other is Lake Brienz. For a springtime stroll or summer’s boat ride it’s one of the most pleasant destinations in the area.

Active types will enjoy tackling the hiking trails from the north side of the lake that lead to the Hobbit-like St. Beatus Caves, while the less adventure-minded will be content joining a leisurely day-long cruise that explores the twin lakes. To explore further afield, visitors can join a guided tour along the lakeshore by car, or even plan a multi-day guided sightseeing trip.

Sightseeing around Lake Thun

Beatus Caves, Panoramic Bridge, Nature Park Blue Lake and Lake Thun Cruise
One of the best itineraries we've had. This type of tour is more about enjoying the amazing views of nature at a slow pace. The stops were all leisurely and spectacular. I can warmly recommend the tour for someone who likes to drive around the lake and see mountains and water from different perspectives.

Nature Park Blue Lake, Panorama Bridge and Lake Thun Cruise Tour from Interlaken
We had a great trip and fantastic views. Mike was very informative and attentive. At the same time we had enough time for ourselves. Loved the blue lake.

many beautiful places in one single day

Beatus Caves, Panoramic Bridge, Nature Park Blue Lake and Lake Thun Cruise
nice views during the entire day. Beatus caves are pretty cool to see, the thrill began at the suspension bridge later. Loved it. Seems to be a place well known by Koreans, as a love-story-movie has been taken there. Walk around in the tiny city of Thun was great. Complete non-touristic spot. Enjoyed lunch there. The tour went along the other side of the lake to "blue lake", which is a nature park. Nice to see the colour of the water. Good for natural lovers and people seeing water first time surrounded by mountains. Then drive to the lake boat and we had 45 min on the lake boat back to Interlaken. Gave another view to the area, we spend the day. Good combination in the tour, tour guide Mike was fantastic with a good sense of humor.

Visit the Alpine gardens of Schynige Platte

With more than 600 species of Alpine plants and flowers, the mountain plateau of Schynige Platte is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. Only accessible via historic cogwheel railway (or a serious hike) this quaint botanic garden seems like a relic from another era. The nearby restaurant with panoramic views is a welcome place to stop for refreshments before heading back down the mountain.
