After a few days of touring Istanbul’s mosques, palaces and bustling markets, you may want to journey outside the city to learn about Turkey’s more recent history, specifically the World War I sites of Gallipoli, where the troops of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) came ashore on a quiet Aegean beach in 1915 to battle Turkish soldiers for control of the Gallipoli Peninsula.

They failed their goal after brutal fighting, but memorials and cemeteries dotted around the area pay tribute to both the ANZAC and Turkish troops. You can experience Gallipoli with one of many tours out of Istanbul, from a simple day trip to a week-long tour of Turkey.

It’s a six-hour drive from Istanbul to Gallipoli, so the one-day tour makes for a very long excursion, but if that’s all the time you’ve got and you’re only interested in the ANZAC sites, it’s your best bet. The Gallipoli tour makes stops at several battle landmarks, including Brighton Beach, ANZAC Cove, cemeteries, original trenches, and the various memorials for Australian, New Zealand and Turkish soldiers. See the location of the annual ANZAC Day ceremony, and enjoy the hilltop view from the Australian Lone Pine Memorial.

You can combine Istanbul and Gallipoli in one tour with the 5-Day Small-Group Turkey Tour from Istanbul: Gallipoli and Troy, which includes two nights in Istanbul, an Istanbul sightseeing tour, the Gallipoli tour with an overnight stay, an afternoon tour of Troy, and then one more night back in Istanbul. Or, spend five days on a history-filled Aegean tour that starts with Gallipoli and then takes you to the ancient cities of Troy, Ephesus and Hierapolis. (Side note: If you’re only interested in Troy, consider the Troy Day Trip from Istanbul.)

Go all out by visiting everything mentioned above plus the ancient Ottoman city of Bursa on the 8-Day Best of Turkey Tour from Istanbul: Pamukkale, Bursa, Troy, Gallipoli, Ephesus. Or, for the truly devoted, visit Gallipoli on ANZAC Day itself – April 25. With the 4-Night 'ANZAC Day' Experience in Gallipoli and Istanbul, you can attend the annual memorial services, including the famous dawn service.
