Nagarkot

Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

The Basics

Located just 20 miles (32 kilometers) from central Kathmandu, Nagarkot is a popular day trip for its clear mountain views. On a high ridge at 7,136 feet (2,175 meters), the town is surrounded by thick pine forests, which allow for day hikes or longer treks to surrounding towns. Guided tours often arrive for sunrise and may include a hike. Others visit as part of a longer tour or stay overnight for sunset and sunrise.

Nov 2022 - Great view and hike
Madan was our guide and he was excellent. They picked us up on time and we had a beautiful sunrise to see. Afterwards, we did a 9 mile hike (more of a walk) through rural villages in Nepal. This was a really unique experience as we got to see another side of Nepal (not just the tourist side). Madan was very informative about local life and I learned a lot. Would recommend doing this tour highly. Seeing this side of Nepal was one of the highlights of my trip.

The early start is worth...

Nagarkot Sunrise View and Day Hiking from Kathmandu
The early start is worth it for the most amazing dawn. The driver was excellent and Madan, my guide, brilliant allowing plenty time both for viewing and enjoying the sunrise and then for the very comfortable walk. This is not overly long and, whilst moderately step, it is mostly on roads/tracks used by local folk for walking to school and similar activities. So well worthwhile getting out and experiencing the countryside at first hand with expert company.

Nagarkot Sunrise Trip & Hike to Changu Narayan from Kathmandu
Highly recommend this tour. My guide communicated with me really well before and during the trip and going the extra mile to check I was ok throughout the trek. Unfortunately the weather was against me so didn’t see sunrise but it was still worth it to see the forest and village life. The temple is awesome and my guide was very informative. No hesitation in recommending this to get a taste of life outside the city.

A top 5 birthday experience!

Nagarkot Sunrise and day hike to Changunarayan from Kathmandu
I booked this experience for the day of my 46th birthday, and it is easily on my top 5 birthdays list! Ray was a fantastic guide, teaching us about everything from culture to geography to botany to zoology, and os much more! Nagarkot is a beautiful place to see the sun rise over the Himalayas, but don't expect to easily see Everest, because Nagarkot is a protected place, and trees grow. Ray was able to point it out for us, though. One thing the booking description doesn't make fully clear is that there is a hike after sunrise. You head down the mountain, and through valleys and villages, and it's fairly wonderful! The full hike is around 15-16 miles, all the way to Changunarayan, but we only did about 8 miles. Ray was very clear that there were multiple stopping options, and told us that most people don't do the full hike, and many don't even do any of it. There are opportunities for a few stops along the way, but there are very few western toilets on the route. Overall, a phenomenal experience, made even better by Ray.

Private Sunrise or Sunset Tour of Nagarkot with return transfers from Kathmandu
“The early bird catches the worm” and that what happened. My tour guide, Bijen Maharjan was already waiting in the hotel. But he came to meet me a day before the tour to acquainted ourselves. That’s a great gesture on his part. He is well-mannered type of good guy ask for him as a tour guide, good command of English, knowledgeable of Nepal’s history. Even the driver is great, he navigates and maneuvers the narrow road with ease. The Road to Nagarkot is treacherous, careless driving you end up in the ravine. Nagarkot known for its views of the Himalayan mountains which is very striking to watch while the sun starts to emerge from the mountain or when the sun settles down. Admire the rays of the sun as it hovers the sky. The wonders of God’s creations.

Nagarkot Trekking in Kathmandu Nepal (1 Night / 2 Days)
Mountain views, fresh air, birds’ song. My super guide Shishir, the great hike from Nagarkot to Nepal’s oldest hindu temple. People, dogs, pigs, goats, buffalos, cows, cats. Life in the hills with bad roads. But so happy people!

Nagarkot Sunrise and Day Hike to Changunarayan from Kathmandu!!
This tour was a great way to spend a day outside the city. Ghan, our guide, was super fun and a great guy to spend time with. After an amazing sunrise looking at the Himalayas and a very good breakfast in a local restaurant, we went hiking for about 3:30h, where we had great views of the mountains and the valley. It was also a nice opportunity to see how is life in Nepal outside the city. Despite not being professional hikkers, we didn’t have any problem to complete the long walk. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Great tour with Krishna who was a terrific guide. Knowledgeable, patient, fun to be with, patient. And the hike allowed me to see some beautiful sites and small villages. Highly recommend!

When to Get There

The mountain views are clearest in winter (December-February), although it can get cold at the high altitude. November is slightly warmer, and has a high chance of clear views. Avoid Nagarkot during the monsoon (June-August), as views are generally poor and the road condition are particularly bad.

Hike to Changu Narayan

A good day hike from Nagarkot is to Changu Narayan, home to the oldest temple in Nepal. The approximately 4-hour hike is mostly downhill from Nagarkot, through forested hills, terraced farmland, and small villages. For the best experience, join a guided tour with all transportation included, or arrange to stay in Nagarkot overnight and set out for Changu Narayan in the morning. From Changu Narayan, take a bus or taxi back to Bhaktapur or Kathmandu.
