Ang Thong National Marine Park

The 42 karst islets of Ang Thong National Marine Park (Mu Koh Ang Thong) fill a picturesque oceanscape spanning more than 95 square miles. These limestone pinnacles harbor secluded powdery beaches, sheer cliffs and caves, all ripe for exploration. Only two of the islands in this craggy vista are inhabited—the largest, Koh Wua Talap, with its park rangers, restaurant and rustic tourist bungalows, and Koh Paluay, an island with a fishing community of traditional sea gypsies—otherwise, it's all pristine nature. Tropical and dry evergreen forests of the interior area house oriental pied hornbills, little herons, monkeys, bats and more. In the shallow waters, dolphins, whales and otters can sometimes be found.

Many day cruisers to the park come in search of the lost idylls described in Alex Garland’s The Beach; it's said the area inspired his fictional backpacker utopia. All guided tours go through Koh Wua Talap, and many opt to start the journey by earning breathtaking panoramas of the archipelago along a one-hour round-trip climb to a popular overlook. Other common stops include an enclosed saltwater lake on Koh Mae Koh and the sea arches and extensive coral reef of Koh Sam Sao. In addition to just plain cruising, many Ang Thong adventures also incorporate activities such as snorkeling, diving, hiking and kayaking.

Practical Info

Most visit Ang Thong National Marine Park on single-day guided tours from Koh Samui, 17 miles to the southeast of park headquarters, or from Koh Phangan, located approximately 20 miles northeast of the park. Guided tours are the best way to explore the marine park, and most day trips include lunch, snorkeling gear, park admission fees and hotel transfers. Tour boats are often multi-story, open-air, 40- to 50-person crafts, but small private speedboats or luxury yachts are also available. The best months to visit are between March and October when the seas lie flat; the park closes completely during the height of the monsoons between November and December each year.
