Raj Heritage Walk

Raj Heritage Walk

star-5
This is a Story Walk & one of our most popular tours, certified by so many travelers through the years! If you like listening to stories about the Raj days and Kolkata then this is your tour! It is a very interesting story of how the British started trading in this part of the world rivalling earlier European entrants. Many a booming cannon later, they became the leading traders. What followed was a small fort, a big port, a great battle, many changing fortunes and lots of colonial cunning & politics. The East India Company & later the Flag of the Empire gave a lot of importance to Calcutta for its trading, political and administrative clout. She was after all the Capital of British India for a long time & arguably the second most important city in the Empire. Along with Defense & Administration came institutions for Entertainment, Education & Emancipation. The light of European renaissance came as an ambient source & later cascaded into its own indigenous, self generating brightness.

Sutanuti Trail - Kumartuli and Bagbazar Walk

Sutanuti Trail - Kumartuli and Bagbazar Walk

star-5
Explore some of the oldest temples, ghats and settlements of Sutanuti with The Ganges Walk.Sutanuti was one of the three villages that was merged to form the city of Calcutta. It is said that in the year 1690, Job Charnok had anchored his ship in the Eastern banks of river Hoogly and entered the land through Sutanuti Ghat. The name Sutanuti was derived from ‘suta’ meaning yarn and ‘nuti’ meaning bundle. Here a textile workshop and market existed known as Sutanuti Bazar. During that time there were no roads in this area apart from one road that connected Halisahar to Kalighat. This road was called the Chitpore road and was commonly known as the pilgrim trail. As the city grew, the natives started settling here. The British called it the Black Town.

Explore The Dying Ghats Walk

Explore The Dying Ghats Walk

star-5
Kolkata (erstwhile known as Calcutta) which had developed beside the Hooghly River — a tributary of the mighty Ganges…it’s tale dates back even before 1690 A.D. When British executive, Job Charnock reached the small Village of Sutanuti. This river has played a very important role in the lives of the inhabitants for hundreds of years and helped shape the city of Kolkata. There are dozens of ghats along the river with archaeologically significant buildings, evidence of the rich heritage of colonial Calcutta. Some of these beautiful structures still exist though the maintenance and supervision are minimal, these derelict ghats are evidence of the extent of indifference towards the cities heritage with the passage of time…Architect Charles Correa had remarked "Where else in the world would you have a sacred river flowing by with majestic buildings in the backdrop? Yet, there is no connect between the city and the river. The city should be a celebration of the river Hooghly."
