Shark Diving on Aliwal Shoal with Oceanic Blacktip Sharks (No Cage)

The Baited Shark Dive, it is a phenomenal experience to be in the water with Black Tip Sharks! I can assure you that the baited shark dive is 100% safe, as a business and an industry we are able to boast a 100% safety record with NO CAGES. You will be accompanied by a  shark specialist in the water. The sharks are not interested in the divers at all but more the chum and oils in the bait drums. There is no reason for any concern, you will not be in a cage but on scuba approximately 5m-8m from the action.Your dive time is approximately 50min. The briefing we give is extremely detailed and divers are advised on the safe diving procedures of being in the water with the sharks. Once you arrive at the site we place a large drum in the water, this is filled with “chum” at 10m and a smaller ball at 15m. This is what attracts the sharks.  Super fascinating!

The narrow ridge parallel to the coastline about 3 kilometres (3.1 mi) offshore, more specifically referred to as the Crown, is the part usually referred to as Aliwal shoal, and this area is inside the sanctuary zone of the Marine Protected Area. The shallowest part, extending to within 6 metres of the surface, is at the north end of the Crown. The shoal is about 380 metres wide to the north, narrower to the south, and then spreads out towards the coast in the section known as the Ridge. Average depth of the Crown is about 12.5 metre, and the Ridge is about 19.5 metres average depth, with a few isolated pinnacles The shoal offers a variety of dives from open water, advanced (wreck diving).
