Japan’s most cultured city knows how to put on a great festival. Barely a month goes by without some historical extravaganza or other featuring on the local calendar. Here’s our list of some of the best:

July – Gion Matsuri

The Gion Matsuri is Japan’s most famous festival and has a history that dates back to 869. Taking place throughout July, the highlight of the festival is a large procession of elaborately decorated floats. Some of the floats (the hoko) stand up to 25 meters tall, weigh up to 12 tons and are pulled along on giant wheels. While the float procession is undoubtedly a festival highlight, several other events take place throughout the month.
