South Lake Tahoe, sitting on the California and Nevada border, is arguably the most popular spot to enjoy the natural beauty and activities of Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America. It offers a mix of everything the Lake Tahoe area has to offer — with a variety of outdoor activities, including one of the largest ski resorts near the lake, and with nightlife and gambling available with a short cross over the state line into Nevada.
Year round visitors can easily get out onto the lake, with water sports rentals and launch spots throughout the area. There’s more going on in South Lake Tahoe than in any other part of the lake. In the winter months, Heavenly Valley Ski Resort lifts leave from the center of town. South Lake Tahoe has several walking paths, bike trails, and camping areas to enjoy the lake and surrounding forests. There are also several beaches and docks from which to enjoy views of the bright blue water.
Situated on the edge of the lake in California, the town of South Lake Tahoe extends 5 miles along U.S. Route 50, also known as Lake Tahoe Boulevard. The closest airport is Reno-Tahoe International.
