Come to Banyan Tree Park to experience the wonders of nature in the small, seaside town of Lahaina. A visit to the ancient tree is not complete without also learning the history of the tree and the region in the adjacent courthouse’s Lahaina Heritage Museum. The centrally located square is also a jumping-off point for surf lessons, adventures in the Lahaina Harbor, and luaus on the beach.
Banyan Tree Park is a must-see for nature-lovers, artists, and botanists.
Events and art shows are frequently held beneath the banyan tree.
The Old Lahaina Courthouse and Lahaina Heritage Museum are open daily and free to enter.
Make a day of it and visit the surrounding restaurants and shops.
Lahaina is a 45-minute drive from the Kahului Airport on Route 30. When you arrive in Lahaina, take Prison Street Drive to Front Street, where you encounter the massive tree. If you do not have your own car on the island, you can reach Lahaina by bus or on a sightseeing tour of Maui.
The Old Lahaina Courthouse and Lahaina Heritage Museum are open daily and you can visit the tree itself at any time. The park is an ideal spot for a shady midday picnic or an evening stroll when its branches are illuminated by golden street lamps. Visit on the second and fourth weekend of the month for bimonthly art festivals or come during Halloween and Christmas for special holiday displays.
Lahaina’s prized tree arrived as an 8-foot (2.4-meter) sapling imported from India in 1873 to honor the 50th anniversary of the first Protestant mission in Lahaina. Now well over a century old, the tree covers a quarter mile and is one of the largest banyan trees in the US. The tree has 16 main trunks and countless dangling vines waiting to become new roots.
