Fernando Botero's Medellín
Medellin is an innovative city that is constantly innovating, and one of the ways it does so is through the art of its most famous artist, Fernando Botero.

In a way, this city belongs to Botero. The artist, painter and sculptor was born here, and after studying in Bogota and later in Spain and Italy, he moved on to Mexico, New York and Paris to work. Although he has an extensive collection of paintings, he is best known for his sculptures, which are not only exhibited throughout Colombia but also in international museums.

The streets of Medellin come alive with the nearly 100 sculptures that were donated by Botero to bring art right to the people. His focus on sculptures of common people and animals, each done in a unique style of exaggerated figures, leads them to often be humorous and thought-provoking. The Museum of Antioquia also has one of the largest collections of Botero paintings.

The central Botero Plaza has 23 bronze sculptures by the artist, such as Man on Horseback, Roman Soldier and Head. Parque San Antonio is home to the famous Pájaro de Paz sculpture, which was blown up in a suspected FARC attack in 1995, killing bystanders. Botero then created an identical sculpture and placed it next to the original, a testimony to the hope for peace in Colombia.
