Summer evenings are the most wonderful time in Melbourne. Balmy breezes, clear skies, fruit bats overhead, and friendly locals make it the perfect environment to relax with friends. And for about 2 decades, Melburnians have also been blessed with a great variety of outdoor cinema venues, catering to all tastes and styles.
The trailblazer was Moonlight Cinema, which operates in the grounds of the wonderful Botanical Gardens. With a blend of new release and classic films (Breakfast at Tiffany’s, anyone?) it often sells out. Low seats, dinner picnic packs, champagne and more are available at the venue, or you can bring your own.
Other operators include upmarket OpenAir cinema at Birrarung Mar, parkland on the banks of the Yarra River in the city; Rooftop Cinema – offering cult classics and beer to a groovy young crowd on the roof of a central city building; and St Kilda Open Air, on the roof of the Sea Baths in the bayside suburb of St Kilda .
