The Basics

The floating gardens of Xochimilco make an easy half-day trip from Mexico City, and the quintessential way to explore is a traditionaltrajinera boat ride around the Xochimilco canals and islands. Xochimilco tours are often combined with a Mexico City sightseeing tour, visits to historic sites such as the National University of Mexico or the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan, or a tour of the Coyoacán neighborhood, where highlights include the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum and the Frida Kahlo Museum.

Worth it
Loved this tour. Absolutely worth it. Add the Frida Khalo Museum. Tour guide Sergio is wonderful and full of knowledge. Includes a visit to a silver store and to a university (UNAM) not listed in the description. If you’re not into the silver factory, good opportunity to grab some facials for breakfast at a carreta nearby or water from the tienditas.

We had a great time on this your run by Amigos. Kevin (who led the English speaking tour) was very knowledgeable, patient and gave clear directions. Loved seeing the murals at the UNAM and Olympic stadium, the tequila at Xochimilco and the beautiful Coyoacan. The value for what you get is perfect. Prepare yourself for a full day of sightseeing. Definitely recommend.

Teotihuacán was very interesting. And Xochimilco was a lot of fun. Day 1 guide was great Leonardo. Day 2 although knowledgeable her English was not great along with having to wear a mask.

Private Tour: Xochimilco, Coyoacan and Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City
Cuidad Universitaria, and Xochimilco with a boat ride on a tranjinera and lunch along the canal. Our guide was informed, punctual, and organized, it made the day enjoyable and a true learning experience. I have been to these sites many years ago. The revisit was very worth it.

Private Tour: Xochimilco, Coyoacan and Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City
Giovanni, our guide, was very helpful and knowledgeable. The boat ride was the highlight of our tour, with musicians on boats playing Mexican music to boating visitors, and vendors selling food and souvenirs. Our grandson got quickly bored at Frida Kahlo Blue House so we had to rush, but I will go back without him next time. The Coyocan neighborhood has so many good restaurants and more souvenir items that catch your eye. I really wouldn't mind making the same tour again.

Xochimilco, Coyoacán and Frida Kahlo Museum Monolingual Tour
Wonderfully chaotic ride in a trajinera in Xochimilco. Fun time drinking and eating from vendors floating by on other boats. Great experience unique to this place. We also got a lot of history on murals from UNAM and the visit to the Frida House museum was also great. It’s was a very activity packed day.

The Floating Gardens of Xochimilco

Xochimilco’s floating gardens are the last vestige of Mexico’s elaboratechinampas—the agricultural system set up by the ancient Aztecs. Devised to make the most of the fertile lake lands of the Anahuac Valley, thechinampas are comprised of small, man-made islands of farmland linked by a network of canals. Though most of the Aztecs' massive system of canals have long since been drained, the suburb of Xochimilco offers a glimpse into the ancient beauty of Tenochtitlán, and the remarkably preserved site is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
