Things to do in  Moorea

Welcome to Moorea

Picture perfect doesn't begin to describe this tiny volcanic island in French Polynesia. Located across the Sea of the Moon from Tahiti, the smaller, quieter Moorea makes a great destination for travelers searching for an off-the-beaten-path experience that's still relatively easy to get to. Private and small-group tours whisk you to adventures across twin Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, home to hotels, restaurants, and stunning white sand beaches. Or follow your guide into the rest of the island's dense tropical forest dotted with small villages, coffee plantations, and fields of spiky pineapples growing in the South Pacific sun. Explore Moorea on a sand or sea tour—or both. Group tours via 4x4 vehicles up to Belvedere Lookout reward travelers with views of the entire island and you can sign up for a guided tour or rent your own extreme roadster to travel up the perilously steep (and exciting) Magic Mountain. To admire Moorea by sea, join a snorkeling, jet skiing, or boating excursion around the island and experience the calm, warm lagoons crowded with South Pacific sea life (including dolphins). Take it up a notch with a helicopter tour for aerial views of the emerald green, forest-covered volcanic island surrounded by glorious sandy shores and jewel-toned seas.

Magic Mountain

star-51,377
Magic Mountain is on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia. Though the mountains on Moorea are not extremely high, they are particularly rugged. Magic Mountain is one of the highest points on the island. It is located along the exterior part of the island, and it offers spectacular 360-degree views of the island and the surrounding clear blue waters of the lagoon and the ocean. On the way up the mountain, visitors will pass villages, scenic valleys, fruit trees, and pineapple plantations. Magic Mountain lets visitors experience the breathtaking scenery an ancient volcanic island. The mountain is not accessible by regular cars and can only be reached by 4WD or ATV. For this reason, the best way to experience Magic Mountain and its views is by taking a tour of the island that includes a trip up the mountain. Most tours also include Belvedere Lookout, which is located toward the center of the island and offers gorgeous views of both Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, ancient Polynesian sites, and the agricultural school. It is a great way to take in the wonderful sights and culture that Moorea has to offer.More

Lycée Agricole d'Opunohu (Agriculture School)

star-5221

The school also makes fresh fruit juices, jams and sorbets, which are available for purchase. They also offer tastings of the fruit products they make. Visitors can hike on educational trails in the school's plantations in order to learn more about the school and its work and to enjoy the scenery. At the agricultural school, you can also learn about the different tropical plants, flowers, and fruits that are native to French Polynesia.A visit to Lycée Agricole is often included on tours around the island. Other highlights of these tours include the lookout points at Magical Mountain and Belvedere Lookout, which offer different vantage points for viewing the island, the volcanic landscape, and the surrounding water. In addition, these tours often include ancient Polynesian sites, hiking, swimming, and taking in the gorgeous island scenery.More

Cook's Bay (Baie de Cook)

Cook's Bay (Baie de Cook)

star-00
Surrounded by rugged mountain landscape that seems to reach up from the water, Cook's Bay is one of the main tourist areas in Moorea (it's here that cruise ships come to moor their boats). The area is home to restaurants, shops, and hotels, but it’s still relatively sleepy and laid-back—this is Moorea, after all!More

Tiki Village Cultural Centre

star-00
For a crash course in Polynesian culture, the Tiki Village Cultural Centre is the place to go. In a stunning lagoon-side location on the island of Moorea, you’ll experience traditional weaving with natural fibers, the art of flower garlands, and intricate wood carving. The village also celebrates two different forms of adornment: tattoos, which came to the West via Polynesia, and rare black pearls.More

Opunohu Bay (Baie d'Opunohu)

Opunohu Bay (Baie d'Opunohu)

star-00
Surrounded by lush green and jagged mountains and littered with sailing vessels and tour boats, narrow Opunohu Bay is where the HMS Bounty moored to search for breadfruit, leading to the famous Mutiny on the Bounty. Today, the tranquil bay is a favorite among locals and travelers looking for a less developed stretch of sand.More

Separating the beautiful Cook’s and Opunohu Bays, Mt. Rotui is the peak of Mt. Rotui. Snorkeling excursion, discovery of the lagoon and its fauna. Intimate vessel.
I’m usually a little afraid of snorkeling because I’m not the strongest swimmer and I have a fear of fish touching me (but I still want to do it because I want to see the sea life).

All about Moorea

When to visit

If you want good weather, consider visiting Moorea during the dry season, which runs from May into October. July and August get more crowds due to school holidays and the honeymoon season. The wet season brings with it more reasonable room rates and fewer tourists (except around Christmas and New Year’s), but be aware that the temperatures are a bit hotter.

Getting around

The best way to get around Moorea is by renting a car or scooter, particularly if you want to explore the island independently. If you’re doing a tour or activity, your tour operator usually provides round-trip transportation from your hotel. There’s also a bus service, with separate routes on the east and west coasts, that’s both reliable and affordable.

Traveler tips

Dining in Moorea can be expensive, especially if you stick to resort restaurants. But you can still eat well on a budget if you know where to go. You’ll find plenty of great options around the island, from roulottes (food trucks) serving up everything from crepes to fresh fish, to local favorites such as Allo Pizza overlooking the eastern side of Cook’s Bay, where you can get all sorts of made-to-order pizzas baked to perfection in a wood-fired oven.
