Trip Inspiration
Hidden beneath the unassuming façade of a residential building, Bunker-42 was once one of the USSR’s best-kept secrets—a nuclear bunker buried 197 feet (60 meters) underground. Now preserved as a museum, the site offers insight into Soviet-era Russia and the Cold War.
The only way to access Bunker-42 is by guided tour. When you arrive, you receive a "secret pass," which grants you access to the bunker. Once inside, explore the network of tunnels and rooms; see the old Command Post, generators, and storage rooms; watch a 20-minute film on nuclear testing in the Cold War; and admire the collection of Soviet-era memorabilia, including military uniforms and weapons.
Group tours take around one hour.
Tours are conducted in Russian and English.
There is also a Bunker-42 restaurant and bar located in one of the underground tunnels.
The bunker is wheelchair accessible.
Bunker-42 Cold War Museum is located in the Taganka district of Moscow. The closest metro station is Taganskaya, less than a 5-minute walk away.
Bunker-42 is one of many Soviet sites in Moscow offering insight into Cold War-era Russia. Others include VDNKh (All-Russia Exhibition Center), filled with Soviet-era palaces and monuments, Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics, and Buran museum. There’s also Victory Park, Park of Sculptures, and House on the Embankment museum. For something more light-hearted, the Museum of Industrial Culture is full of Soviet-era appliances and memorabilia, and the Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines lets you play vintage games.
