Trip Inspiration
Situated at the base of the Monument to the Conquerors of Space—which depicts a rocket soaring into space—Moscow’s Museum of Cosmonautics looks back at Russia’s role in space exploration. From retro space race propaganda to Soviet-era rockets, exhibits celebrate the Soviet space program and the country’s outer space achievements.
Visitors can purchase tickets for the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics at the door or prebook in advance. There is some English signage at the museum, but if you want a deeper understanding of Russia’s space exploits, go with a guide who can further explain the significance of the artifacts on show. Many Soviet history tours of Moscow combine a visit to the Museum of Cosmonautics with a trip to the nearby VDNKh—the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy—where a space-themed pavilion offers yet more space-related exhibits.
The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is situated north of central Moscow and can be easily reached by public transit. Take the metro (line 6) to VDNKh station. From there, it’s just a 5-minute walk to the museum entrance.
The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is open Tuesday through Sunday. It’s popular among Russian tourists and lines can be long, especially on weekends. Come midweek for a quieter experience.
The Museum of Cosmonautics sits within VDNKh, a vast Soviet-era exhibition complex. Originally opened in 1939, VDNKh has been added to and expanded over the years. It features sculptures, fountains, green spaces, a seasonal ice rink, and an aquarium as well as numerous pavilions devoted to different Soviet republics (such as Belarus, Uzbekistan, and Armenia) and various sectors of the economy (such as transport, metallurgy, and agriculture).
