When King Emperor George V laid the plans for New Delhi, a city that was to replace Calcutta as the capital, in 1911, he aimed to create a monumental landscape that demonstrated the immense power of Western civilization. The Imperial Hotel was a part of those plans. Completed in 1931, New Delhi’s first luxury hotel bore witness to those last tumultuous years leading up to independence, and the property has maintained its sense of historic significance and charm now over 100 years after first opening its doors.
