East Village

Between Houston Street, Bowery, & 14th Street, New York City, New York, USA

The Basics

The hip and sometimes grungy East Village is a prime destination for food and drinks. Culinary walking tours offer foodies the option of exploring the mainstays, including Japanese restaurants in Little Tokyo and old-school Italian eateries (often called "red-sauce" restaurants by locals). To get the most out of the Village's drinking establishments, try a guided tour through the burgeoning cocktail scene to taste top-notch libations and locally produced spirits. Beer drinkers can opt for brewery tours, which not only introduce travelers to the village's best ale houses and craft beer but also typically include transportation so you can explore without hopping on the subway. Other options include pub crawls, activist history walking tours, and ghost tours.

Private East Village TV & Movie Sites Walking Tour (On Location Tours)
Katherine was there waiting for us with Umbrella in hand. She was so sweet to show us the East Village including tons of movie and tv show locations. Not touristy at all. Very Fun. We asked tons of questions about shopping vintage. She knew quite a few places that I never would have found on my own. Lots of girl talk and Acting.

East Village Haunted Manhattan tour
We had a super great experience with Frankie! We booked a tour with my friend and eventually we were the only ones so we had a private tour. We are french and as my friend didn’t really understand English, I had the time to translate almost everything. Frankie was very patient. Thanks a lot!!

The experience was absolutely awesome! Our tour guide, Bobby Pin, showed us all kinds of treasurable and unique spots known to musical artists and icons I never would have noticed or picked up just walking through NYC. His knowledge was exceptional and I highly recommend any music fanatic to take this tour, you will not regret it.

East Village Haunted Manhattan tour
Frankie was such a wonderful guide! So animated, funny, passionate about the subject matter and super friendly. The tour itself was a great experience for both the believer and the skeptic. The ghost stories were cool and the history of the area was great to hear. Perfect start to an NYC weekend and a perfect intro to the area.

When to Get There

The East Village is a fantastic year-round destination, though spring and autumn bring perfect light-sweater weather and blue skies. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter is often windy, snowy, and cold. You’ll want to arrive early in the day for sightseeing and shopping. Plan a weekend evening visit for a night on the town, but show up early, as many restaurants don't take reservations.

Where to Take a Break

Take a few minutes to rest in the centrally located Tompkins Square Park. An East Village icon situated in Alphabet City, Tompkins Square is central to the neighborhood's social activism and culture. The park’s benches, playgrounds, and chess tables are situated beneath leafy, American elm trees and offer a perfect place for relaxation.
