The Do's and Don'ts of New York City Broadway

1,482 Reviews
Broadway is one of the world's most iconic theater districts, and seeing a show here is a quintessential Big Apple experience. With 13 million people attending plays and musicals each year, a bit of advance planning can ensure your Broadway experience is everything you hoped it would be. Here are some top dos and don'ts.

DO purchase your tickets well in advance.
Many showtimes, especially for popular musicals and plays, sell out early. Purchasing your tickets ahead of time means you get to bypass the lines and avoid disappointment.

DO dress smart casual, and bring an extra layer.
Many theatergoers dress up, but keep in mind that you'll likely be doing some walking to and from the theater. Make sure you’re comfortable, and bring an extra layer in case it's chilly inside (or outside during winter).

DO stick around for the stage door.
The Broadway pastime of stage dooring involves waiting for the stars of the show to make their exit so you can get an autograph after the performance. Ushers can point you where you need to go, but be prepared to wait and have your Playbill ready.

DON'T go on an empty stomach.
Food is not allowed in most theaters, and evening performances don't typically end until about 10pm. Unless you’re a night owl, plan to have an early dinner at one of the dozens of restaurants within walking distance of Broadway's theater district.

DON'T be late.
Better yet, arrive early. Anticipate that it’ll take you a few minutes to pick up your ticket, use the restroom, and find your seat. If you arrive late, the ushers likely will not let you in until there's a break in the action onstage.

DON'T seat yourself.
Wait at the entry for an usher to escort you to your seat. You’ll avoid taking the wrong staircase, and, more importantly, you’ll get the Playbill for the show you’re seeing, a popular New York City souvenir.
