Stretching from the Great Lake Taupo to the tourist hotspot of Rotorua, the Taupo Volcanic Zone is one of New Zealand’s most famous volcanic regions, home to some of the world’s youngest volcanoes and boasting a high concentration of geothermal areas. The modern Taupo region lies on terrain sculpted through years of volcanic activity – even Lake Taupo itself is set in the caldera of an ancient volcano – and the resulting landscape is pocked with craters, natural hot springs and steaming geysers.

Today, discovering Taupo’s geothermic attractions has become a popular pastime among tourists and a number of natural and man-made parks have been set up to make the most of the natural wonders. The Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park is the country’s largest and one of its most impressive thermal parks, featuring a colorful landscape of natural fault-stepped silica terraces, hissing geysers and bubbling mud pools. Nearby, the Wairakei Terraces offer a magnificent expanse of manmade white and pink silica terraces, filled with geothermal water; the Craters of the Moon park features a dramatic moon-like landscape worthy of its name; and Taupo’s Volcanic Activity Center provides an interactive introduction to the region’s unique geology.

The otherworldly terrain isn’t just a tourist sight – the geothermal waters have long been used by the Maori for their healing and health properties and a number of local spas offer healing mineral baths and natural mud wraps.
