Sitting half an hour from the much better known Sunshine Coast, Noosa is often overlooked as a destination. Yet Noosa is ideally situated as a base to many of the prime attractions of the area. Next time you’re visiting, opt to stay in Noosa rather than the crowded Sunshine Coast, and take day trips to some of the region’s best attractions.
Attractions like Fraser Island. Not only is it the biggest sand island in the world, and home to some of Australia’s most interesting wildlife, it’s one of Queensland’s most visited attractions. Not to mention it’s World Heritage listed and covered in freshwater lakes. Some are crystal clear, some a stunning turquoise, and some stained deep red by tea trees around the edges. A Fraser Island 4WD Eco Tour will take you to see all of the above and much more. For a similarly eco-themed day trip, cruising through the Noosa Everglades over lunch or afternoon tea is a fantastic option, and includes commentary on the abundant birdlife and the Noosa community.
For more of an inside experience, don’t visit the area without taking a day trip to Underwater World or Australia Zoo. Underwater World is a huge aquarium complex, and one of the most popular attractions on the Sunshine Coast. There are four main attractions to the park: the Turtle Temple, featuring rehabilitating turtles before they’re returned to the wild; Bay of Rays, which, as it sounds, is filled with rays of all kinds; the tropical themed Coral Cove; and Shark Shipwreck, which holds eight different types of shark – that you can dive with! Underwater World has many more exhibits too, but those four ought to get you started! Australia Zoo is the brainchild of the late Steve Irwin. Today it’s run by his wife and two children and aims to provide a wildlife adventure that educates visitors about conservation. When you visit, be sure to check out the newest additions! Two tiger cubs and a baby koala were born in late August.
