It’s easy to see that history is alive in Nord Pas-de-Calais. Travelers venturing into this region in the north of France will find old-world architecture, a wide array of European influences and plenty of memorials and sights from World Wars I and II.

The 250-acre Canadian National Vimy Memorial, which served as the battlefield for the Battle of Vimy Ridge in World War I, is the perfect place to settle in for a history lesson and learn about the connection between the Americas and Europe in the earlier part of the century. The Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, where more than 7,600 soldiers are buried, also serves as a lifeline between France and Canada, since more than 40 of the North American country’s soldiers are laid to rest here.

Travelers to the town of Arras can check out buildings that date back to the Iron Age and learn more about the Roman settlement, Viking attacks and early ownership by the Spanish Netherlands. And those looking for a tie to Africa will not be disappointed by the Egyptian art on display at the famous castle in Boulogne.
