Private Tour: Full day Sogeri Plateau

This full-day private tour of the Sogeri Plateau near Port Moresby is suitable for visitors who have already toured the main city and would like to see more of the surrounding countryside. While the coastline north and south of Port Moresby is dry bushy terrain interspersed with swamp, the inland road climbs to the Sogeri Plateau, a green oasis of fertile farmland and forested mountains. After an initial stop at the Bomana War Cemetery, you'll visit the Adventure Park Zoo, National Orchid Gardens and bird of paradise breeding facility before a steep climb through the Rouna Gorge to the scenic Sogeri Plateau, with optional side trips to Owers Corner (the beginning of the Kokoda Trail), the Varirata National Park with its panoramic views of the Papuan Coastline, the Crystal Rapids cascades on the Upper Laloki River and the Sirinumu Reservoir, a man-mad lake which supplies water for Port Moresby's reticulated supply and hydro-electricity generation.

Active Volcano & Hot Springs Tour

Rabaul volcano is one of the most active and most dangerous volcanoes in Papua New Guinea. Rabaul exploded violently in 1994 and devastated the lively city of Rabaul. Since then, the young cone Tavurvur located inside the caldera has been the site of near persistent activity in form of strombolian to vulcanian ash eruptions. The caldera has an elliptical form (14 x 9 km) and is surrounded by a steep volcanic ridge several hundred meters high.Google earth view of the Rabaul calderaBackground:Rabaul is the easternmost member of the volcanic Bismarck arc and located on the north eastern end of the Gazelle Peninsula at the NE end of New Britain. Thanks to its shape forming a sheltered harbor Rabaul city was the island's largest city prior to the major eruption in 1994. The 8 x 14 km caldera was formed by at least 2 major eruptions. One about 7100 years ago formed Tavui caldera offshore to the north and a second eruption about 1400 years ago created the present-day shape.
