Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil

The Basics

The largest art deco statue in the world, Christ the Redeemer is 130 feet (39 meters) tall with arms measuring 98 feet (30 meters) across. Just about every Rio city tour includes a stop here, with many combining a visit with other top attractions such as the Sugar Loaf Mountain cable car and Santa Teresa. Choose between hiking tours, city sightseeing tours, and half-day trips to the statue.

Full Day in Rio: Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Maracana and Selaron with Lunch
The tour was very organized and started on time. Pedro, our guide, made sure that we knew all the background stories and historical facts of the city and the visited sites. The bus was clean and tidy. The only down side is that the skies were cloudy which was not great when visiting the sites at the high altitudes ex Christ the Redeemer statue and the Sugarloaf mountain but that the tour had no hands in that and they did this best to take us to alternative view spots of the city.

Rio Shore Excursion: Christ The Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Maracana and Sambodromo
Our Viking cruise ship encountered a major delay of arrival in Rio, due to a medical issue of a passenger. Instead of the planned 8:30am arrival, we arrived in port at 2:30pm. Our tour guide responded to our SOS messages promptly and communicated well. We were picked up at the ship at our new designated time, and our tour guide really made EVERY effort to share and show as much of Rio as possible in the time available. Bravo to our guide, who was able to be flexible and resourceful!

Christ Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain Small-Group Tour
We had an absolutely fabulous time visiting Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf. Everything was efficient, on-time and enjoyable. Our guide Kathi was fantastic and very nonweldable, a true Carioca (a word she explained as someone from Rio). We would highly recommend this tour. Thank you.

Great tour, even though we didn’t see the sunset due to the heather conditions. However, everything was very well organized and the guide was great!

When to Get There

Opening hours vary seasonally, but the site is roughly open from 8am to 6 or 7pm. On a clear day, the views from the base of the statue include the beaches of Leblon, Copacabana, and Ipanema, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and Guanabara Bay. After dark, the statue is lit up and seems to hover over all of Rio. Expect heavy summer crowds; consider booking a skip-the-line ticket to save some time.
