San Antonio Highlights
"Remember the Alamo!" cry three million tourists a year as they stampede old San Antonio's central mission. It's the site of the infamous 1836 pitched battle between a few hundred Texans and the mighty Mexican army led by General Santa Ana. (Fun historical note: Among the Alamo's garrison were Jim Bowie, knife fighter; and David Crockett, frontiersman and U.S. congressman.)
San Antonio de Bexar was the territory's largest Spanish settlement when it became the seat of Texas state government in an independent Mexico. The city's growth in the 20th century is due in large part to local military bases - and your tourist dollars.
