The Basics

Carnivalesque Fisherman’s Wharf teems with sights, sounds, tastes, and activities to entertain the whole family. Here you can enjoy panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz Island; walk through underwater tunnels at the Aquarium of the Bay; and board historic ships and a World War II submarine at the Hyde Street Pier. The wax collection at Madame Tussauds and the theatrical San Francisco Dungeon are also popular, while the antique penny arcade Musée Mécanique is a must-see for gamers.

As one of the most popular attractions in San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf is featured on most full-day and half-day city tours. Explore the wharf and surrounding neighborhoods on a Segway, bike, or coach tour; enjoy craft brews on a walking tour of North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf bars; or visit on a full-day excursion to such famous Bay Area sights as Alcatraz, Chinatown, Haight-Ashbury, and Muir Woods.

Enjoyable half day
Robert was an excellent guide and made our tour very enjoyable. He was very knowledgeable about the area and its history. For me, I'm hard of hearing, found his talk easy to follow.

Fisherman’s Wharf your way to Alcatraz!

Alcatraz Ticket + Fisherman's Wharf Walking Tour
After searching through the many options for Alcatraz tours I settled on this one and it did not disappoint! I was extremely pleased with the tour portion as it was a quick, but informative tour of Fisherman’s Wharf. Our tour guide John packed in a huge punch of knowledge! He was witty and engaging and ensured we knew all the “go to” spots in the area. Scoma’s Seafood is MUST! Highly recommend this tour if you’re looking a quick tour option.

Robert was a great guide. He had all the passion and knowledge needed to give you great insight into a new area but he also cared about our experience too. He made sure we had time to take everything in, take photos and see all the best sites that you may not have known about otherwise. Thanks for a great morning Robert!

Alcatraz really interesting but walk a little short

Alcatraz Ticket + Fisherman's Wharf Walking Tour
The guide John Hurst was very knowledgeable and informative but the tour length at 75 minutes was a little short and really only covered the fisherman's wharf area. The trip to Alcatraz was really interesting particularly the audio guide whilst walking around the cell block.

Adam was informative, flexible, patient and funny while he led us expertly through the mean streets of San Francisco. Couldn’t have asked for a better tour.

San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf Private 1-Hour Walking Tour
It was interesting listening to audio and walking through the whole Fishermans Wharf But this is a difficult one to do if you have smaller kids. I would recommend def this one to parents with kids above 10. It was a little distracting for us to watch kids, walk and then follow through the audio

BEST Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf Full-day City Tour in San Francisco
Having a driver who was knowledgeable of the history, sights and the city was nice. We enjoyed the Golden Gate Bridge, being at Twin Peaks even though it was a foggy day the driver made the best of it. The food was great at the pier we had the fried calamari and the clam chowder from Chowders. It was so.....much to see on this tour that you were not bored. It was our first visit to China town, and even though we did not go to Alcatraz the views from the piere was nice.

How to Get There

Fisherman’s Wharf lies on the city’s northern shore, next to Ghirardelli Square, Fort Mason, and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The area is easy to access via public transportation. Both the Powell–Hyde and Powell–Mason cable car lines end near the wharf (opt for the more scenic Powell–Hyde line). Alternatively, take MUNI’s historic F-line streetcar to Taylor Street or the 30-Stockton bus to North Point and Hyde streets.

When to Get There

The wharf is a year-round destination. Summer is the most popular time to visit, when street performers are out in force and attractions are at capacity. To avoid crowds, visit on a weekday and arrive early, but remember that most shops and attractions don’t open until about 10am. Sunny days are best for a visit, but the wharf has enough indoor attractions for dreary days.

Exploring Nearby Attractions

Fisherman’s Wharf is an ideal jumping-off point for visiting other San Francisco attractions. To pick up the city’s most famous treat, head west to Ghirardelli Square, a former chocolate factory that now houses boutiques, sweet shops, and wine tasting rooms. Continue west on Bay Street to visit Marina boutiques and enjoy the natural wonders of the Presidio, or head south down the Embarcadero for the Ferry Building gourmet marketplace and the hands-on Exploratorium science museum.
