I opted for the boat ride around Alcatraz without visiting the ex-prison and under both the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge. The ride was quite long and I took plenty of photos. There was auto-recording going live during the ride and I did learn a lot of facts about San Fran and Alcatraz. The boat is quite big, having a few levels and enough space for people to take pictures.
The San Fran City Tour was also very nice. The guide and the bus driver was very knowledgeable and engaging. We stopped several times to take photos. The bus follows the many points that one could visit on hop on and hop on bus, including going via the Golden Gate Bridge to the other side and stopping there for photos. However, the driver also took us to Twin Peaks - on the highest hill from which one can see an incredible panorama San Fran - and hop-on / hop-off buses do not go there I did also hop-on/off buss - so I spotted the difference. A bus they use is an air-conditioned coach - which is a very good option for those days when temperature in San Fran is quite chilly. Overall, a very good tour. Lidia

One stop shopping for any tour in San Francisco! HIghly recommend
Excellent,,,saw a lot of San Francisco and lots of information
A great visit to Alcatraz starting first with a visit to Muir Woods and Sausalito both of which are really beautiful. Alcatraz itself is still in marvellous condition and the audio tour really completes the picture. Very interesting tour and worth the money and time whilst in the lovely San Francisco Bay Area.
Very good trip to Muir Woods. Driver was very informative. Took us to a great photo spot of Golden Gate Bridge before bringing us back to the city. Got us to the Alcatraz queue on time. The only slight annoyance was the need to phone 24 hours beforehand to confirm the booking which had already been confirmed and paid for beforehand. Also there was a lot of waiting around before the trip started.
The alcatraz self guided tour is really well organised, this coupled with the bay cruise is excellent value for money. Highly recommended.

The tour was worth it simply for the Alcatraz early access to get there before the crowds. The rest was bonus to us. It was fun to ride in a converted cable car, although a little frightening at times in traffic. Our tour guide was clever and knew everything about San Francisco.
The Alcatraz tour is a self-paced walking tour with audio - for EVERYONE. It is a really high quality tour, and I was VERY glad to do it before it got crowded.
We weren't actually on the FIRST boat to Alcatraz, which I think I read somewhere, but still on a very early one - maybe the second or third. And that was plenty early enough. Alcatraz wasn't really crowded till we were ready to leave. There was plenty of down time while we waited for the boat to Alcatraz, but that time is out of the hands of the tour and guide, since they have to hand us off to the National Park folks for that leg of the tour.
During the cable-car tour, our guide kept things entertaining and informative even when we were getting from one place to another, or were stopped in traffic.
Next to Alcatraz, my favorite stop was Fort Point National Historic Site.
The tour folks did have us arrive at the meeting point way too early. The tour info says the tour departs at 7:30, but to arrive at 7 as I recall. When we called the day before, they said we should arrive BEFORE 7AM. We arrived at 6:45. In fact, we stood on the corner till nearly 7:30 until any official of the tour arrived - in the cable cars. I sort of expected a handler In the meanwhile, the gathering tourists were engaged and entertained by street people as we waited. Still, even after our initial introductions and orientation, well after 7:30, one couple hadn't shown up, and we wound up having to leave without them. So get there on time, but be realistic.
Fantastic tour. Loved travelling in the cable car and got to see some beautiful sights. Lunch was delicious and Alcatraz tour was brilliant
Tour guide Randy is AWESOME. Helpful, funny without being obnoxious and spot on with his other city recommendations. I travel frequently domestic and abroad and I can say that Randy is one of the best guides I've had the pleasure of listening to. Alcatraz was a bucket list tour for my husband and I and if you are going to San Francisco - BOOK EARLY - and do the Muir Woods Alcatraz tour. This is a MUST SEE while in this part of our great country. Kudos to Randy for making the experience even better!
Excellent tour. Our guide Dave was excellent and ver knowledgeable. He kept us informed and entertained the entire way.
Best tip we had was to buy pass the Ranger introduction and make straight for the audio area.
every thing was ready...every thing went smooth...had a great time...would recommend to others
Alcatraz was everything I heard abut and more. They make it sound like the walk up to the prison was awfull and it wasn't nearly as bad as it sounded. The cruise was fun as well. You need to eat before or after since it's just a lite meal but going under the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset was pretty cool.
Highly recomend both.

Very relaxing tour with great views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Lovely food provided on board and great musical entertainment. Would highly recommend this tour.
Enjoyed this so much! We were on a get on and off bus. It was a full two hour ride - the tour guide was so amazing that we did not even get off of the bus at any of the stops. Alcatraz was also so worth going to...enjoyed the audio tour.
