A relaxed alternative to the raucous Spring Break scene of Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo oozes historic charm. Lose yourself on a wander along cobbled streets warmed by the sun, stopping to admire colonial churches and shady plazas that offer respite from the midday heat. But don’t miss the coastline—trekking along the sand atop camel; getting closer to coves, caverns, and the iconic Los Cabos Arch in a kayak; or admiring the coastal scenery from above at the adrenaline-fuelled zipline park are all top things to do in San José del Cabo.
For the most agreeable weather before the summer storms hit, head to San Jose del Cabo between December and February, when you’ll likely find the best hotel deals and beat the spring break crowds. Humpback whales migrate to the Pacific waters of San Jose del Cabo from December through April, so visiting then increases your chances of spotting the marine giants.
Most of the bars and restaurants in San Cabo del Lucas are concentrated in its downtown area, which is easy to explore on foot. You can’t, however, reach the neighboring resort of San Jose del Cabo—you’ll need to take a taxi to check out this laid-back colonial gem. To reach the area’s beaches, a water taxi is the fastest and most scenic route, but make sure you agree on a price beforehand to avoid surprises.
For eye-catching coastal scenery and a rich variety of marine life, head out of town to Cabo Pulmo National Park—around 90 minutes by car from San Jose del Cabo. Surrounded by desert landscapes and mountains, the national park is also home to pristine beaches and one of only three living coral reefs in North America, making it an ideal place to snorkel or scuba dive. Join a guided snorkeling or diving tour for an inside look at the underwater wildlife.
